Did Jeremy Castro flip to UCLA?

It appears so…

Coveted defensive end/linebacker Jeremy Castro wrote on his Twitter feed that he flipped to UCLA from Oregon after his official visit this weekend, this as the Tampa Times is reporting that Oregon coach Chip Kelly is close to a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As if this offseason could get any crazier…

Now if the Castro conversion comes to fruition, the Bruins are going to get another solid prospect for what’s expected to be a shift to be a hybrid 4/3 – 3/4 defense. Castro is ranked as the No. 21 outside linebacker by Scout.com No. 17 by Rivals.com and No. 108 by ESPN.com – and he has offers from Oklahoma, Washington, Boise State, Clemson and several Pac-12 schools.

Castro is 6-3, 245 pounds and would help the Bruins at a position of need, with an influx of young talent needed on that edge rush. Here’s a video of his junior year highlights, and I’m sure a senior video will be up soon, as he had 106 tackles and 11 sacks:

Another great get by Coach Jim and the staff.

How is there always such HUGE discrepancy between ESPN’s rankings and Scout/Rivals rankings?

  • captainqtp

great, great player at a position of need. Way to go coach Mora!

  • Journalist

You’re burying the lead, Jonny. The story here is Kelly leaving Oregon.

  • Anonymous

Helloo! He got an offer from the HAT?! Now he’s committed to the Bruins!? I like this dude.

  • The EDGE

Maybe our excitement should be guarded, as Kelly is reported to turn down the NFL.

  • Editor-in-chief

Journalist – being that the “here” is a UCLA blog, Jon’s got the story right.

  • ucla-of-the-rockies

Maybe CJM can get Josh Smith signed over to relieve CBH’s eternal ulcer.
Hell, Smith is probably closer to 400 pounds than his listed 300.
And by how he’s been stumbling around in recent weeks, he seems to have no trouble playing with his hands on the ground, either.

Now the real work on Castro begins. You can bet that Kelly, now rejecting the NFL, won’t let him go easily. The momentum on Castro is slightly in our favor at the moment, but it would be foolish to assume he’ll stick around without constant and continued recruiting efforts from our coaches.

  • bruin91

Castro said in an interview that he flipped b/c of his moms desire for him to stay close to home and when he visited UCLA he felt comfortable and enjoyed the campus on his visit. He also said he can’t wait to play in the new 3-4 alignment that the coaches have planned for next year. He will play outside and rush the passer and fly around the field. He says nothing about Kelly and his possible defection to the NFL.

This is NOT true. You make it seem like Castro picked UCLA after hearing that Kelly might leave to Tampa Bay. Completely untrue. As Biggins reported, from his interview with Jeremy, he flipped to UCLA on Saturday night, before any of the Kelly news broke.

Further evidence is found on Castro’s own Twitter, where AO tweeeted him around 5:30pm asking him why he hadn’t changed his Bio to UCLA, when he was already a Bruin. He changed it shortly afterward. The Kelly to Tampa news didn’t break until about 7pm.

I follow Castro on twitter and he said he DID know about Kelly and it played a roll in why he flipped. Straight from the horses mouth.

  • BruinScott

My wife is a teacher at Castro’s H.S. and Castro is one of her students :-). I’m friends with their A.D. also. I will see if I can get some more info about Jeremy.

  • MichaelRyerson

Jeremy and I have the same dry cleaners and, no we’ve never spoken BUT I once got a pair of khaki trousers of his by mistake (by the way, they fit perfectly!) and in the pocket I found a recipe for homemade chili written and signed by…Rick Neuheisel! Get it? Rick Neuheisel! The former Bruin coach! Jesus what more do you need?

  • NedRyerson

I used to be Rick Neuheisel’s insurance agent. BING!

  • Who’s Who at the Zoo

When I was a student ay UCLA I lived in Venice and knew the guy who lived downstairs from the postal carrier who delivered mail to the dude who’s old lady’s brother fixed the woo-woo pedal for Robbie Krieger of the Doors.

Is that six degrees of separation from greatness?

I saw no such twitter from Castro.

Straight from Biggins Twitter, who talked to him on the phone.

    GregBigginsGreg Biggins
@mattyg531 “No, he committed Saturday and didn’t know about any of the rumors”

    From Biggins ESPN Story

“UCLA just felt like home,” Castro said. “Originally, I didn’t even want to take this visit, my mom is the one who wanted me to because she loves UCLA. Right away, I just felt so comfortable and loved it there. UCLA is the school I grew up rooting for and being on campus was pretty special for me.

“I love the new coaching staff and really like new head coach Jim Mora a lot. Demetrice Martin has been recruiting me for a long time, he’s the one I originally committed to when he was at Washington. Academically, you can’t beat UCLA, and I love the fact that it’s close to home. The defense is a great fit for me too. They’re running a 3-4 defense and like me as an outside linebacker. I’ll be blitzing and running around making plays so I’m really excited.”

Again, he committed on Saturday. Kelly news didn’t break until late Sunday. So, unless this kid has some special inside information and then also lied to Biggins and others, and will now flip back to Oregon now that Kelly is committed, I don’t see the Kelly rumor as a factor.

Look harder! I dont know how to send the link but i’ll copy and paste lol ………
@gohard_16 to be honest, did you know that chip Kelly was leaving? Or at least heard some things so that why you went to UCLA? I support u

    @ksmack4u I knew yes I dis

As I said yesterday, my wife is one of Jeremy’s teachers at VMHS. I have a cool picture she took of him inside the classroom on game day back in December. He’s standing next to 4 teammates in the “Foods/Nutrition class” with their game jersey’s on. Does anyone know how I can attach the picture to a comment? It’s in my computer (it’s in “my documents”) I will gladly send it.

Hope this works. I found freeimagehosting.net. Here’s the picture of Jeremy from December (he’s at far right #16)

Here’s some Jeremy Castro info. My friend from VMHS and some other staff their are disappointed in all three programs (Washington,Oregon and UCLA) for the way they have handled Castro’s recruitment.

Washington, Oregon and UCLA have gone through him and his family and NOT through the VMHS coaching staff at all. They say it’s pretty shady by all three.

My friend said this “verbal commitment” means absolutely nothing to the schools and the kid gets caught in the middle.
Also, he thinks the last school that talks with him will get his verbal commitment.

  • Reformed Droog

Hmm… Posting an unauthorized photo of minors online. I’m not sure who’s going to be knocking on your door first, Chris Hansen or the FBI…

  • Semi-Pro

BruinScott: The schools are recruiting Castro, not the VMHS coaching staff.

  • BruinFaithful

Sounds like your friend and staff are some butt hurt attention seeking individuals.

UCLA, UDub, and OU, have absolutely NO obligation to engage with the coaches. Maybe the college coaches had no relationship with the Vista coaches, it is a small school that doesn’t produce many big time recruits. Maybe the Castro family wanted it this way. It could be a million things. The HS coaches, should have laid things out better for the family and established relationships with the College Coaches. Either way, kind of lame. Why can’t they just be happy for a kid, instead of being selfish and thinking about themselves?

You need your friend to tell you that a verbal commitment means nothing? Wow. Well, that’s kind of common knowledge, but ok. Obviously verbal commitments mean nothing, but UCLA has decided advantages over the other two. UCLA, among it’s other advantages is close to home, is a great academic institution, where he will have the privilege to be coached by coaches with over 90 years NFL experience, he already has a relationship with and likes Demetrice Martin, whom he had already committed to in the past, and MOST importantly, his mom wants him to go to UCLA. Guess who usually wins that battle? So, I would say UCLA is sitting fairly pretty.

So your friend thinks that the last school that talks to him will get verbal commitment, or signed LOI? Well, if that’s all it’s gonna take, let’s block Udub’s and OU’s calls and call it a day.

BTW, look at this cool video from Saturday, of Coach Jim Mora running into and talking to future NFL Hall of Famer Hines Ward in the lobby of the Century Plaza Hotel during this weekends official recruiting visits. Watch the 1st and 2nd video as the kids are in aw and gravitate around Hines and Coach Mora. Pretty cool if you ask me. I don’t think you can get that kind of cool access at UDub or OU.

I’ve been a UCLA Bruin fan 35 years and I’ve been reading Jon Gold’s tremendous blogs for over a year. I was just trying to give some honest informaton to fellow bruin fans. That’s all man.
I will go elsewhere if you guys think the info is worthless. Sorry
    Go Bruins!

  • Anonymous

    Don’t worry, Scott.

    Thanks for the info.

Now now guys can’t we all just get along! All info is appreciated. GO BRUINS!

  • BruinFaithful

I appreciate the information, but not the misinformation and attitude from the Coaches.

I was just calling BS on the coaches, for making such statements. Has nothing to do with you. This blog is for everybody. You have as much right as anybody to be here. I tend to be a bit feisty at times and enjoy a good lively discussion and banter. Afterall, we are all just speculating here. Nobody was actually a witness to any happenings. I’m just trying to frame a well crafted case, as any good attorney would. Although I’m not an attorney.

I’ve been here since day one. 5 years or so now. But you have as much right. So blog on freely as you wish.

  • Welcome to the 21st Century

SUC trolls couldn’t have written a better parody of the the back and forth battle over whether a 4-star recruit would or wouldn’t be giving a VERBAL promise from an 18 year old…

…carries as much weight as other 18 year olds saying “Yeah, I’m on birth control.” or “Yeah, I’ve been tested for AIDS, we don’t need jimmies.”

Please wake up and start living your life again before Feb 1, 2012!

Interesting how many Bruin fans make idiotic comments on the Trojan side of this site, but few Trojan fans comment here. I’m wondering what that says….
