Does this count as a 16-clap?

UCLA's recruiting over the last few weeks has been an absolute blur. With an almost entirely new coaching staff, the Bruins have been collecting verbal commitments like stamps, some from players whom the team wasn't even heavily involved with as recently as as a few weeks ago.

The latest verbal commitment is not one of those.

UCLA fans have known about Ellis McCarthy for a long, long time.

The hulking Monrovia High defensive tackle - rated No. 2 nationally by Scout and Rivals and No. 4 by ESPN - verbally committed to the Bruins on Monday night after the news that Cal defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi had accepted the defensive line position at Washington. UCLA offensive line coach and recruiting beast Adrian Klemm took to Twitter once more to clue fans in on the news, with a nod to new Bruins' defensive backs coach DeMetrice Martin, "8 CLAP!!!!! My boy Meat doin' work!"

McCarthy, who verbally committed to the Bears at the US Army All-American Game, is a dominant figure on the line, when he wants to be. Mora and his new defensive coaches will be entrusted to get the McCarthy's full potential - Mora has preached to me that he wants kids who love football - and if he can help foster that kind of intensity, McCarthy could be one of the premier defensive players in the Pac-12 in a few years.

Holy Crap! If this guy truly signs with us on NLOI Day, this could be the beginning of a new era. I'd love to get excited about this, but I need this to translate with wins during the season. And that won't happen immediately with a brand new staff and very young players...Hope Springs Eternal! Would love to get one more "space eater" for this class!

I'm so happy I could cry! Ellis McCarthy is a true difference maker...Through Coach Mora and staff's tireless recruiting (yeah, and a little luck!), my BRUINS will be turning the corner soon! Keep up the outstanding work, guys!!

While "hope springs eternal," Ellis McCarthy is truly a difference-maker. Commits (followed by SIGNINGS) from talent like his are destined to turn things around for us! Outstanding job, way to stay relentless, Coach Mora and Staff! GO BRUINS!!!

Wolf said today before the announcement that u$c thought they might have a shot at McCarthy. It's not NSD yet but "oh well" to $c so far.

Wow I have to say this was a big time get for us baby bruins. We really struggled with getting any pressure at all especially up the middle and he can be a difference maker ala b. price. Even though I'm a member of DG get fired fan club, r now even though mora has not coached a gm or run a practice, I have to say so far this looks like a gd hire so far by DG.

GO BRUINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where did all them Mora haters scurry off to? Even those negative jerks at Bruins Nation gotta be eating some crow right now.

A big pick up for the Bruins but this class nonetheless is very weak. McCarthy went to Monrovia High. Who has he played against? Hopefully Mora develops highly rated recruits better than Neuheisel did (see Morrell Presley, Randall Caroll, etc). USC continues to dominate us in years to come is something I forsee.

Dan Guerrero keeps his job!

Coach Mora is a fantastic hire! He has smartly added great recruiting coaches with deep ties nationwide.

With Coach Mora's hard-nosed attitude, I can see our football team returning to its past glory!

Go Bruins!

How many commits do we now have and how many scholarships are available?

Hey, folks, don't get too excited. Murphy Hall will have the final say.

I haven't heard of any academic issues with McCarthy...

As a USC fan I hate to say that McCarthy is a huge lift for the UCLA program. I am crossing my fingers that he switches to USC but I think the chances are very slim.
I think Mora's NFL experience is probably one of the biggest assets to recruits. I don't think 2012 is their year but if they are able to develop the talent the 2013 game against my beloved USC should be a great one assuming Hundley and the offense develops. I think UCLA will be a lot better defensively in 2012 but will probably be a top 25 defense by 2013 assuming no one leaves early (e.g. Owa, Marsh).
I was wondering, UCLA has over 20 commits, how many players can they sign this year? Does anybody know if some of the current commits plan to greyshirt and sign as part of next year's class?

~ 2 EE, ~ 2 gray shirts. ~ 20 available spots for 2012.

Nice. Hopefully his signing can entice other defensive guys like Shaq and Shittu to latch on to the blue and gold.
