Wow. Tosh Lupoi to Washington
It appears there is going to be a massive shift on the recruiting front.
Cal's can-sell-ice-to-Eskimos defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi has signed on with Steve Sarkisian and Washington, whose new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is putting together one heck of a staff.
The move could ultimately benefit UCLA, as the Bruins seem to go head-to-head more often with the Bears than the Huskies. It could also create some epic recruiting battles between Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin.
It will be interesting to see how it affects the mammoth class that Cal is/was putting together. Will we see a mass exodus? Can UCLA sway guys like Ellis McCarthy and Jordan Payton now? This is definitely the biggest news of the recruiting season in the Pac-12, from a coaching standpoint.
And this only serves to exacerbate the traffic jam we've got with offers/commits and available scholarships. If I were sitting on a Bruin offer I wouldn't be late to the fax machine come Feb. 1.

Ummmm. I think Cal should be more concerned with how this affects them. This move is obviously directed at securing Cal's Lupoi recruits before signing day.
So much for Tosh's allegiance to Cal and all the nice facilities.
I think this would help UCLA.
All those Cal in state commits who wanted to stay in CA and were mostly going to Cal because of Tosh, will now give us a hard look.
But what a freaken staff Sark is putting together. Two Grand Slam hires. First Wilcox, now Lupoi. Mora needs to step it up and get us a Top DC and DL. McClure is not going to cut it.
I wouldn't get too worked up over Wilcox. He'll be gone at first opportunity (perhaps as early as next year). Tosh to DC then, which is a gamble for UW.
But to answer Jon's question, yes, both McCarthy and Payton will likely be Bruins now. Add Aziz to the mix as well - he wasn't a commit to Cal yet, but would have been.

I am starting to believe the rumors about Fangio. Mora would have made a hire by now if it wasn't somebody on a currently active NFL staff. My only concern is that the 49ers have a great shot at making the Super Bowl. That means that the hire won't even be announced until after signing day. Still, I'd be happy to wait for him.

The early rumors are that McCarthy will be a Bruin if he's not a Cal Bear.
That's great news for us but it also means that we're going to have to let some scholarship players go. I'm thinking we lose Prince. He's already gotten 3 years of free schooling out of this and it seems like Brehaut or Hundley will be our QB next year.

What's making you think Fangio? He'd be a great get but I can't imagine Mora luring him away from the SF job.

I should have qualified it better. I've heard two names come up involving the SF staff. But there seems to be some foundation as to it being somebody from an NFL playoff staff. At this point, of the names I've heard, I would be very happy with any of them. Lots of excellent candidates.

Fangio is already the DC for the 49ers. Why the heck would he go to UCLA as a DC?
Why would Fangio leave SF to be a DC in college? The only way he would go to UCLA, is if UCLA fired him and then hired Fangio to be head coach.

Why would Fangio leave a DC job for a potential Super Bowl winning team, for the same job at UCLA. Makes no sense. I had heard Jim Leavitt, who is also for SF.
