Jon, seen this before…(Football) Hype over recruiting class, hype over coaching staff…should I stay hyped?

  • Ley

Hi Jon, by all accounts it seems that the atmosphere has changed over in Bruin Football land. Are the junior day comments correct in there assetment??? What did you notice. Postive??? Thanks.

  • ucla-of-the-rockies

Hey Jonah, welcome back! So, just how did Chaz take the news that you were going to the Oscars with your Mom instead? Even with that obstacle, was it the clean-shaven look that had Taylor Swift drooling over you?

Jon, could you get Jacob Ruffman to give us his take on the Junior Day last weekend? Thanks in advance to both you and Jacob.

  • BSKB

Josh Smith’s conditioning has been a detriment this year, what reasonable tools are available to get him ready in time for next season? As much as I’d love to see him forced to work with Sal Alosi, I don’t see that as happening anytime soon.

  • BruinBall

Since Reeves Nelson played 5-6 games in Lithuania, is he now considered a pro and can’t play for any other college programs with his remaining eligibility? Any idea where he is now? Thanks.

    Hey Jon,

Word on the street is that Sports Illustrated is going to release a fairly damning report about the UCLA Basketball program and a supposedly rampant use of drugs/alcohol.

    Any thoughts?

  • Domski

I feel we have many players suited for the 3-4 defense. I have a 2 deep in mind and on paper it looks amazing but who knows. What’s your 2-deep for the 3-4?

  • Joey Tribbiani

    How you doin’?

  • Bernie Wallen

I am so discouraged with the direction the basketball program is taking. Does Howland ever comment on the state of the program? Does he ever express disappointment, talk about his own short comings, or why he has failed to maintain a top 25 program?

Does BruinRunt have male performance issues causing his non stop spewing of trash on the SC blog?

    Hey Jon,

It’s the spread offense with 4th and 1/2 yard from the 3 yard line. Do we line up behind center or stay shotgun? I can’t count the number of games lost in the 1st quarter in the same situation with the pistol formation.

  • HHBruin

I read somewhere that Jeremy Lin coming out of high school wanted to attend UCLA because his brother was attending and obviously he wanted to play on the basketball team. But since there were no guarantees about making the team and Harvard offered him a spot on their team, he chose Harvard. Do you think if he had played for Howland would he had seen any minutes considering he was lightly regarded coming out of high school? Do you think he would be in the NBA today if he had played in Howland’s defense first approach?

  • bibs

I read that a number of offers were made to players at Junior Day.What do you know about this?

  • San Diego Therapist

If UCLA doesn’t get Bazz and Parker, what is the backup plan?

  • Roose Bolton

Who turned Mora onto Klemm, Martin, Broussard and Yarber?

Is there any actual pressure On Dan Guerrero? Is he at all on the hot seat?

Once again, two questions, no particular order, take your pick:

    1) Here are the rushing stats for ASU from last year (according to ESPN)

    Cameron Marshall 230 1050 4.6 70 18
    Jamal Miles 29 237 8.2 51 0
    Kyle Middlebrooks 42 150 3.6 15 0
    Brock Osweiler 83 90 1.1 25 3

There were four other players listed, but the carries they had were 13, 11, 6 and 1 so I did not include them.

In 2010 Osweiler only had 38 carries, but overall ASU appeared to have more RBs carrying the load. I have no idea if injuries might have had something to do with the increased carries for the QB in 2011. On the other hand, from what I could tell, 2010 was the first year Mazzone was OC so there also may have been a learning curve in 2010 with the system.

So the question is, do you have a sense of which year is more indicative of how much Mazzone’s offense (ordinarily, by design) involves the QB running the ball and how much that might factor in to who gets the starting nod?

    2) What is the over/under on Coach Yarber’s use of the “First and foremost” line in an interview?

  • bruincheerleader

Jon we need your insights to this SPORTS ILLUSTRATED incoming story about UCLA Basketball…please man tell us it ain’t so?

  • 50-0

    It’s so cheerleader.

BruinRunt, now spend time on this blog.

  • Tim

Jon, there’s going to be an SI piece tomorrow, and it isn’t going to be pretty. What’s the best thing for me to do as a fan (and a student) in the wake of this?

  • BruinRogue

Any chance Howland starts shaking up the rotations before the tourney?

  • Pray? Cry? Laugh?

  • BSKB

Jeeze, Jon, sounds like my wedding night, but in a different order.

  • ucla-of-the-rockies

    Jon: P/C/L? LMAO.
With some of the questionable character surrounding Bruin basketball in recent years, it wouldn’t surprise me if Reeves or Dragovic were near the center of this. One thing is certain, it doesn’t involve Josh Smith.
Hey wait, isn’t food a drug?
Cringing a bit, but interested as hell in reading this. And maybe this will be the final draw for Shabazz, whose comment would be: “Yeah, I still chose UCLA though, because it most reminded me of ‘Vegas.”

Jon, when did you realize that Ben Howland plays serious favorites, and that his lack of discipline is killing the bball program?

Second Q: do you think Howland gets fired/resigns?

Third Q: would you fire Howland?

  • Anonymous

It seems obvious that both Neuheisal and Howland needed a mentor or advisor to help them with issues. The A.D.job seems to be mostly administrative. Since Guerrero wasn’t a coach he may be a decent administrator but probably doesn’t have the experience to be a coach a head coach. (Company’s sometimes hire an outside consultant to perform this function). Who, if anyone provides this assistance to UCLA’s coaches.
