Jones named Team MVP at banquet

From UCLA:

UCLA senior point guard Lazeric Jones was presented with the Coach John Wooden Award as the Bruins’ Most Valuable Player Monday night at the 2012 UCLA Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

Jones, a second team All-Pac-12 selection this past season, led the Bruins in scoring (13.5 ppg), assists (4.1 apg), steals (1.8 spg) and in three-point field goals made (48). Jones also was named second team All-NABC District 20 in 2012 and was the only Bruin to start in all 33 games during the 2011-12 season. Jones also earned the UCLA Alumni Association Award (team assist leader), for the second consecutive year. His 136 assists per game ranked tied for fifth in the Pac-12.

Sophomore guard Tyler Lamb (9.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg) took home the Irv Pohlmeyer Memorial Award (Outstanding Defensive Player). It is the third straight season a guard has won the award (Malcolm Lee was a back-to-back winner in 2010 and 2011).
Guard Norman Powell was named the winner of the Seymour Armond Memorial Award (Most Valuable Freshman). He averaged 4.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game while averaging 17.8 minutes per contest and playing in all 33 games, making one start on the year (in the win at Arizona State).

Powell and sophomore forward Travis Wear were named co-winners of the Bruin Bench Basketball Award (Most Improvement in All-Around Play and Mental Attitude).
Travis Wear also was a dual award winner on the night, as he was awarded the Bob “Ace” Calkins Memorial Award (free throw champion) by shooting 79.1 percent (68-for-86) from the charity stripe, which ranked 8th in the league.

Sophomore forward David Wear also was a two-time winner on the evening, claiming the Gerald A. Finerman Award (team rebounding leader), leading the squad with 202 rebounds (6.3 rpg), which ranked 8th in the Pac-12. David, an honorable mention All-Pac-12 performer in 2012, averaged 10.2 points per game and also garnered the Bruin Hoopsters J.D. Morgan Memorial Award (Outstanding Team Play).

Junior forward Brendan Lane (1.6 ppg, 1.8 rpg) claimed the Elvin C. “Ducky” Drake Memorial Award for Competitive Spirit, Inspiration and Unselfish Contributions.
Senior guard Tyler Trapani was named the winner of the UCLA Faculty Athletic Representative Award (Academic Achievement and Team Contribution) for the second straight year (he shared the award with Lane last season).
