Gelalich named Golden Spikes Award semifinalist

UCLA junior outfielder Jeff Gelalich, who ranks second in the Pac-12 with a .367 batting average, was named one of 30 semifinalists for the 2012 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday.

Gelalich hit nine home runs with 39 RBIs and 50 runs scored while stealing 15 bases for the Bruins, who host visiting Creighton (26-28) at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday night to open the NCAA regional. Gelalich has reached base in 53 of UCLA’s 56 games and is vying to become the Bruins’ second-straight Golden Spikes Award winner after Trevor Bauer won in 2011.
