UCLA Hoops: Coach Ben Howland on C Josh Smith

For those who couldn’t see the full video here’s what UCLA coach Ben Howland said regarding Josh Smith.

To put it in context, Howland was asked how Josh Smith has been coming along and said Smith has had a couple good practices. Howland then was asked if Smith has continued to get in better shape. Howland responded with the following:

“I think he’s got a long way to go where we want him to ideally be. We’re less than two months from opening up our regular practice so there’s a lot of work to be done between now and then. But I think this trip will be good and a barometer to where he is in his conditioning and where he needs to be because he’s going to play a lot.”

We caught a glimpse of practice after Howland’s press conference. I saw Smith but I can’t tell whether he’s lost any weight just based on the fact I’ve never covered this team. I asked a seasoned beat writer and he thought Smith actually put on some weight since the last time he saw Smith.

Are you kidding me Joshua smith?! Wow!

He was out on the Drake Stadium track a week or so ago in the midday sun with a trainer doing rope drills (lifting both halves of a thick rope up and down) and medicine ball work. Didn’t look like he was having fun or putting in 110% (and it may have been the tail end of a hard work out), but he was out there.

Reality is he needs to change his eating habits and diet to lose weight. Exercise will just help him maintain it.

Obviously he has no discipline. I hope he is getting a good education because he is going to need it.

    Welcome Tony Parker!!!

He needs to use an app/website like myfitnesspal.

Obviously, he doesn’t realize what he’s doing to his body with all the calories he’s pumping into it.

The bench can be a great motivator. He should sit there until he is in condition to play. Even if it costs some games early, Howland needs to put some accountability back into the program. Perhaps he should not practice until some guidelines/goals are met and solely work on conditioning and diet.

When Bill Walton wanted to keep his hair long, Coach Wooden let him know that the team was going to miss him the next year. He was the returning National Player of the Year…much more accomplished than Josh Smith. Howland does him or the team no favors if he chooses to coddle him.
