Now that my heart is broken over UCLA not getting Gregg Marshall, how can you cheer me up? Any new football news?…

    • Jackster

Yes, south central will continue to SUCs balls!

Was Phil Jackson really going to help with the search for a coach? Any idea what kind of coach he would have brought us? What is the substance abuse policy at UCLA? 4 strikes and you are out? Is the drug of choice usually pot?

    • Jackster

Well tevin McD supposedly failed 3 f’ing times and was finally suspended.

Can you shed some light on UCLA’s academic criteria for potential recruits? How difficult is it to get kids into school here and how has that impacted recruiting in California?

  • Mark

How did you cover the coaching change? You re-tweeted and shared a lot of others’ reporting, but who were you talking with? (PS I don’t expect you to reveal secret sources, but tell us in a general sense)

    • Jackster

Uhhm no secret sources for the Jackmeister.

    • FreeShabazz

      Fight on Trojan Mark!!!

Why do people say Alford is a good West Coast recruiter? Who has he brought in to NM that warrants this claim?

    • drakejr

He had a talented kid from the Rancho Cucamonga area on his team recently. I can’t recall his name offhand.

      • Mark

The 2 best players at UNM this year–Williams and Snell–are from SoCal

        • Peter Chen

Neither were highly recruited or ranked. Williams was someone UCLA decided not to recruit in the end. One four star and no five star/top tier player in six years at UNM. No track record of stellar recruiting or good recruiting. Let’s hope he can do better. Better to develop than recruit and not develop. But, he will need to recruit better (lot better) to achieve success we all want.

          • Mark

Where exactly did Ucla get these past few years with 4 and 5 star players? Letting Williams go was a huge mistake, and, if Sports Illustrated is to be believed, was the catalyst of Howland burning bridges in Southern California. Jamaal Franklin at Sdsu wasn’t a big recruit. I’d love to see him at Ucla! Oladipo at Indiana was not a big recruit. Who wouldn’t want him? Collison and Westbrook weren’t big recruits. They worked out. It comes down to recruiting players to fit your system and getting the most out of them.

          • Peter Chen

UCLA got plenty of top 4-5 star players, the problem is development and mesh (Scout: Freeman 4, Lavine 5, Muhammed, Parker and Anderson 5, Adams 4, Powell 4, Smith 4, Lamb 4, Moser, Stover and Lane 4, Honeycutt 5, Holiday 5, Gordon, Lee, Anderson 4. – approximate same 5 years when Alford was at UNM as when Howland was at UCLA).

Developing talent is very important and we need role players; but why can’t we do both – recruit top players consistently AND developing players? Looking at all the schools that consistently are in hunt for final four – Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Kansas etc, they do both.

The point is that it’s a bit of marketing and puffing for Alford to be presented as good recruiter. His track record doesn’t support that. I think he has developed talent, we can say that.

  • Phil

What will it take to keep Tony Parker from transferring? What kind of promise?

  • http://www.facebook.com/frank.bonaccorso.5 Frank Bonaccorso

How are the UCLA BB players reacting to the news about Coach Alford? Has Shabazz made an official announcement on his future?

  • Sam C

What are our chances with Aaron Gordon? Why would he not want to play for Alford?

    • Jackster

ZERO. Too late in the process…this from twitter verse.

  • Sam C

Alford got mainly transfers in UNM. Will he be able to take advantage of his AAU relationships? Whey are they referred to in articles as shady?

  • Sam C

Looks like allerik freeman and zach lavine are coming along with noah allen. They are all shooting guards and bryce alford is coming too. Isn’t that too many of one position considering we have jordan adams still?

    • Jackster

College bball uses 3 guard lineups all the time. Sometimes 4 guards. So NO PROBLEMO SEÑOR! We NEED big men who will lay their balls out to get rebounds.

  • Hank

Why did UCLA settle on a coach after Brad Stevens fell through instead of making a serious push for Shaka Smart or Mark Few? Why did they not wait one week for the search and also consider (although unlikely gets) Billy D., Izzo, and Pitino?

    • Jackster

Shaka decided to stay at VCU wit that extension, Few is a Zag fo life! And the 2nd part, u answered it yourself. Very unlikely those top tier guys make the move to Westwood.

      • Hank

Alford had just signed an extension too with NM. It means nothing in the end if a better offer comes along – as proven with UCLA. Feel an attempt at least should have been made to get Shaka. As for the others guys… again, you never know till you try. Why live life always assuming someone might say no?

  • Marc

Will UCLA ever wake up and ask Dan Guerrero to move on?

  • http://twitter.com/FatBooster Joe Blow

Jack, why do you think most UCLA fans think we are still the premier basketball program? We haven’t won a title since the 90′s. Don’t you think we are more like Florida State in football?
