Weekly Q&A — 4/7/13 Answers

Q: Last I heard, Ben Howland’s practices were closed and the players only available for media once a week. What do you expect about practices and player availability under Steve Alford?

More of the same.

Q: Would you mind detailing the expectations for basketball signing day, April 17, I believe?

I wouldn’t get my hopes up. The only big name left is Philadelphia point guard Rysheed Jordan, who will announce on April 11 and seems like he’ll stay closer to home with either St. John’s or Temple. Three-star forward MiKyle McIntosh may still be on the radar, but his main recruiter (Korey McCray) no longer has an actual coaching job with UCLA. Shooting guard Bryce Alford will be joining the Bruins, though, and the retention of Norman Powell and Tony Parker gives the team a decent roster as is for next season.

Q: Are the boosters and donors happy with Dan Guerrero? Also, do reporters like you work pretty much every day?

Don’t know enough boosters to have an overall feel of what they think, unfortunately. We generally find something to do every day — phone calls, etc. — even if it doesn’t amount to a full work day.

Q: Is Lacy Westbrook out at practice doing any conditioning on the sidelines with Coach Sal Alosi? Do you think he will be fully cleared come San Bernardino?

Westbrook has not been cleared to participate at all, so I don’t anticipate him being fully cleared for San Bernardino.

Q: Which assistant basketball coaches from the Coach Howland regime are going to remain on the staff? Will they have the same or different positions?

Not confirmed, but I believe Tyus Edney is staying on as director of basketball operations. Korey McCray has also reportedly been offered an administrative position, but may also take a coaching job elsewhere.

Q: Seems like the coaches coming on board are likely to bring someone with them. Is Ed Schilling supposed to deliver Trevon Bluiett (2014) and is David Grace supposed to deliver AAU folks?

Four-star small forward Trevon Bluiett played for Schilling at Park Tudor, but his father is his AAU coach and may want to keep him closer to him. David Grace’s connections to Compton Magic and other AAU teams will certainly help.

Can we anticipate your own in-depth interviews periodically with them? Has the senior staff of Daily News made any suggestions as to how to improve your blog’s fan base/support? Readers would love to have a reason to come back…
