UCLA ranked No. 21 in preseason Coaches Poll

For the first time since 2007, UCLA is ranked in the preseason edition of the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Voted by coaches at No. 21 nationally, I think the Bruins are in more or less in right spot. UCLA has the upside to make a BCS bowl, but could also struggle a bit as it faces a brutal road schedule without all-time rushing leader Johnathan Franklin.

The Pac-12 has five teams in the top 25, tied for second with the Big Ten. The SEC, unsurprisingly, leads with six teams, including two-time defending champion Alabama four votes short of a unanimous No. 1.

USC and TCU are the only ranked teams who had 7-6 records last season.

1. Alabama (58)
2. Ohio State (3)
3. Oregon
4. Stanford

5. Georgia
6. Texas A&M (1)
7. South Carolina
8. Clemson
9. Louisville
10. Florida
11. Notre Dame
12. Florida State
13. LSU
14. Oklahoma State
15. Texas
16. Oklahoma
17. Michigan
18. Nebraska
19. Boise State
20. TCU
21. UCLA
22. Northwestern
23. Wisconsin
24. USC
25. Oregon State

Was Vanderdoes’ 2013 eligibility taken into account?

I believe ballots were due at 1:45 a.m. ET, so some coaches could have considered it. I’m guessing many didn’t.

Nope. The assistant coaches poll is almost never that specific in voting. You get a general gestalt of who is good, if you are lucky.

On the other hand, I can’t say that the team should move up in the polls because they acquired a true freshman who can play. He will hopefully contribute, but if he factors into making the team win one more game, that would be a minor miracle.

When the DL line is thin, a stud freshman in peak shape can give us that little push to win another game.

This something we shall all get used to now the Mora is at the helm! Go Bruins!

      KoolAid is great.

    In my opinion:

Over ranked: Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame, Texas,

    But, what do I know.

I just can’t wait until the season starts.

  • Bruin 34

Agreed Marc. They are holding the loss to Baylor in which we had basically our whole O-line out for most of the game against us.

  • jerrylai8

Too low, but only because we should be 20 ahead of TCU.

With virtually a new starting secondary, running back by committee, and an O-line that still needs to improve a bit, I’m happy as a clam starting at #21 in a pre-season poll. It’s finally time to get to work on 2013 with 26 days until the season opener against Nevada. Let the 2-a-days commence! Go Bruins!
