UCLA’s secondary pickups tempered by loss of five-star tailback Joe Mixon

If Joe Mixon becomes an All-American, it likely won’t be at UCLA.

The five-star running back cut the Bruins from his list of prospective schools, a big hit for a team that has struggled to gain recruiting momentum and needs to replace all-time leading rusher, Johnathan Franklin. Mixon’s top 10: Tennessee, Oregon, Florida, Texas A&M, Cal, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Oregon State, Washington.

Ranked the fourth-best tailback in the country by both Rivals.com and Scout.com, 6-foot-2, 207-pounder is an explosive athlete who excels at finding seams and bursting downhill. The Oakley (Ca.) Freedom High senior also has the hands and route-running ability to become a passing target. He has stated plans to play with both five-star cornerback Adoree’ Jackson and four-star offensive guard Damien Mama, though the trio do not have identical shortlists.

UCLA did build secondary depth with two-star recruit Antreal Allen, a 5-foot-10 cornerback from Auburn, Ala., and local three-star safety JoJo McIntosh (West Hills Chaminade). The former announced his decision on Twitter, while the latter did so in a Vine posted by Rivals.com’s Edward Lewis.

Loss of Mixon? Isn’t signing day for this class sometime next year?

  • Bruin 34

None of these commits really matter cause they are just verbals. Signing day is when it matters. Not really that big a concern.

  • academic issues….has he considered Southern Cal???

    • Joe Blow

No. He considered your school…GEDj U.

Wow. that’s really funny. Maybe read these to someone before posting.

          Wow Guest, you’re funny.

Regardless of where he ends up, he looks like a fantastic back. Any team would be lucky to have him.

I feel like recruits are a little wary of the team after our tepid finish last season. If we can go 2-1 in our Nebraska, Stanford, and Oregon games, we could get a boost similar to the one we got after starting 9-2 last season.

It looks like JW relies on the laughing stock of college sports, the troll website BN, for his information and editorial slant.

Besides Austin Roberts I don’t see the bruins having signed anyone. Can’t rest on last year’s recruiting laurels……
