Bruins earn first top-10 ranking since 2005

UCLA’s 37-10 win over Cal didn’t look as good as the box score indicated, but never mind that for now: the Bruins took care of business Saturday night, and they’re now officially a top-10 team.

The Associated Press poll slotted UCLA at No. 9 after losses by Stanford (previously ranked fifth) and Georgia (seventh). It is the team’s first top-10 appearance since Oct. 30, 2005, when it reached No. 7 following a 30-27 overtime win over the Cardinal. Karl Dorrell guided the Bruins to a 10-2 season that year, his best mark as a head coach, and beat Northwestern in the Sun Bowl for his only postseason victory.

Perched again among college football’s elite, UCLA must next travel to No. 13 Stanford to face a team smarting off its 27-21 loss at unranked Utah. Win that one, and ESPN College GameDay will almost certainly be on hand for Bruins’ Oct. 26 visit to No. 2 Oregon.

The entire AP poll after the jump:

1. Alabama (55), 6-0
2. Oregon (5), 6-0
3. Clemson, 6-0
4. Ohio State, 6-0
5. Florida State, 5-0
6. LSU, 6-1
7. Texas A&M, 5-1
8. Louisville, 6-0
9. UCLA, 5-0
10. Miami (FL), 5-0
11. South Carolina, 5-1
12. Baylor, 5-0
No. 13. Stanford, 5-1
14. Missouri, 6-0
15. Georgia, 4-2
16. Texas Tech, 6-0
17. Fresno State, 5-0
18. Oklahoma, 5-1
19. Virginia Tech, 6-1
20. Washington, 4-2
21. Oklahoma State, 4-1
22. Florida, 4-2
23. Northern Illinois, 6-0
24. Auburn, 5-1
25. Wisconsin, 4-2

Decent ranking for the Bruins, but A&M, which barely survived Ole Miss should not be ranked ahead of us. Next up: chop the trees!

  • Bruin 34

Sounds like Boom! I think the UCLA play calling was pretty vinilla in light of our big match up with Furd. One game at a time Bruins! Win this and then a monumental game in Eugene.

  • OCBrewin

    Jack, you have furd 5-0…

    • Jack Wang

      Thanks. Fixed.

  • jameskatt

One game at a time. Let’s chop down Stanford’s tree then let’s yell “BOOM!”

  • Bruin 34

Tree has already been chopped. Now we need to clear the forest!

  • Joe Blow

I knew we could do it! Indians are next! Then quack quack. I smell another national championship in ucla football!

    • ProbationU

Just knew you would finally see the light Blow-hard. With Haden scouring the country and Ed O motivating the toejams to play that great pass D against AZ, I sense you are going to crush the Irish.

      • Joe Blow

Not as strong as I’m sensing ANOTHER national championship in ucla football.

        • ProbationU

Our next one will definitely come before your next vacated one.

          • Joe Blow

I would agree. We’ll never have that happen again. So 50 years is less than infinity. You win.

          • ProbationU

Guess you have a lot of confidence in Haden finding a coach who can win without cheating. Hasn’t happened before, but I am sure he can change the culture of kink that is SC Football.

          • Joe Blow

Just like your school hasn’t been able to find a honest coach since before Wooden, who was the start of the Papa Sam era.

          • ProbationU

Marv Goux…enough said! Even sold Filthy Pat Haden’s tickets for him. And he was a COACH at SC A culture of cheating. A Bruin is a Bruin for 4 years and a Trojan is a Trojan for LIFE….without the possibility of parole.

          • Joe Blow

You’ve used your Marv Goux/Haden example multiple times. Get some new material. Quit trying to act like ucla is so clean. They are as dirty as any other D1 program. Go look it up on your BB players that ADMITED to it. I’d rather be for life, than 4 years and CHEAP for life.

          • ProbationU

You are a great one to talk about recycled lines…filthy woodie! so funny…hope things are going well for you at Leisure World. Not even the current version of the Phil Knight Ducks cheat like SC has for over 50 years…a school of rich, entitled, little spoiled brats that can’t do anything without bending and breaking the rules.

          • Joe Blow

All we do is keep you crying as a second rate college in town and laugh at your jealousy. No program cheated more than Woodie’s. The players have admitted it. Whine On!

          • Tom Oday

Do you consider Terry Donahue a cheater PU? He coached 17 years after having to vacate/forfeit all victories in 1977.

          • ProbationU

Well guys, seems to me that the whining and complaining has been coming from Trojan-land the last few years about the sanctions and how unfair the NCAA is…waaa waaa waaa. The didin’t even touch you for Joe McKnight, steroid use by Brian Cushing and whatever else was going on under Cheaty Pete. SC has always been able to get kids in school that didn’t qualify for UCLA and UCLA is the 2nd rate school? Delusional Blow. Nikilas is trying to change that but he is going against an alumni that only cares about winning…cheating is okay but losing is worse than cheating. They even had cheating built into the system with Marv Goux who was on the staff and is one of the most loved Trojans ever…and one of the biggest cheaters. Cheating is in the Trojan DNA.

          • Tom Oday

You didn’t answer my question PU. And wasn’t the McKnight case basically the same as the DeShaun Foster case?

          • ProbationU

I don’t recall the reason for the probation in 77, so can’t really comment on it. Don’t consider Donahue a cheater but would need more info. Will say that we don’t whine and complain about the NCAA if we do something wrong. We don’t say that we got penalized because the NCAA is jealous of UCLA and everybody just wants to be a Bruin. And with Foster, we suspended him for the rest of the season immediately. Carroll was fighting with the school to let him play in the bowl game. So, while stuff does happen at both schools, it is the response that is telling. SC has been on probation a lot more than UCLA and the response from the alumni has generally been outrage at being caught.

          • Joe Blow

Ah, Papa Sam didn’t have to complain. It was COVERED UP.

          • Tom Oday

I don’t consider Donahue a cheater either. (1977) UCLA played a inelgible player. And I don’t think Carroll was a cheater. Do you HONESTLY think the sanctions against USC were not too harsh and no UCLA players ever used steroids. Note: I have no affiliation with Joe Blow.

          • ProbationU

What I think about Carroll was that he did not really care about the rules. Nor did Garrett. Carroll wanted to turn a blind eye. Garrett was about to be fired as AD and was under tremendous pressure as SC had not been relevant in football for about 25 years. He lucked into Carroll and Garrett would rather cheat or ignore what was happening rather than lose. Carroll opened practices and there were all types of hangers on around the players exposing them to any number ob offers. I think that he was only focused on winning and working his way back to the NFL. Garrett is the main perpetrator in the decline of SC football and the current sanctions. He relied on the ignorance defense and it ended up lack of institutional control. He came from the old days when violations were not monitored

          • patricia Olforo

Not the same thing, Mr. Oday. In DeShawn Foster’s case, UCLA appropriately dismissed DeShawn from the team, not ignoring the violation, while USC kept McKnight and kept Bush on the team, thinking that USC football was bigger than the sport itself.

          • Joe Blow

            McKnight was cleared.

          • Tom Oday

Spin On! USC suspended McKnight for their bowl game. UCLA suspended Foster for one game. They fought for a one game suspension for him and the NCAA gave him four-plus. UCLA misinterpretted the “value-rules and penalties”.

          • patricia Olforo

Not so, Mr. Oday. Foster was dimissed for the season.

          • Tom Oday

Yes! Correct! He was suspended for four games by the NCAA not UCLA…ending his college career. The NCAA investigation found he drove the SUV for six weeks=$900 rental fees= 30% game penalty=four games. UCLA fought for one game penalty.

          • patricia Olforo

google “greenbacks USC football” they have been cheating since 1903. My hubby saw this lik on another site, I thought I would share with you.

          • Joe Blow

Sure, but Terry never had to vacate a National Championship! hahahaha

          • Joe Blow

            Haden is a clown.

        • EncinitasBruin

And we are not sensing any championships for SC, including in their own conference division.

          • Joe Blow

We have 11. So we aren’t hurting. You? 1/2. 1954. And you WON’T win it this year.

    • patricia Olforo

Carmen Trutanich, USC football, google his name. He is the one responsible for getting the USC players off the hook in all their arrests over the years.

      • Joe Blow

Wake me up when you have new information. I’m not wasting 2 seconds researching the bruins. Do it yourself. You’ll see your thugs got off. Try hit and run, robbery, and that included bruin coaches! So be careful in your glass house.

        • patricia Olforo

Read the facts before you wrongfully accuse others, he was in his car, and the people that were in the house, happened to be family with the owners of the house, the neigbors called the police no knowing who these people were, the police came made the arrestes. Once the dirt settled the owner of the house did not charge anyone involved, not even for trespassing.

          • Joe Blow

Right, and Joe McKnight was working for Hertz, shuttling cars. Are you also saying NO ucla BB players took extra benefits?

  • ProbationU

Rankings do not matter much at the moment. Our season starts this coming Saturday.

    • max

They do to recruits, alumni, fans, and the media.

  • Bruin 34

Jack. Do you think the play calling was a little vanilla in light of upcoming games vs. Furd and Quacks?

  • bruinray97

8 SEC teams in the poll? Really?

  • EncinitasBruin

LSU has a loss and jumped four spots. Wow. On Stanford: they are as good as last year…the difference is we are better.

    UCLA 33
    Stanford 30
