Anthony Barr praises Marcus Mariota’s toughness

Quarterback Marcus Mariota earned himself a bit of additional respect on Saturday. After taking some big hits from UCLA linebackers in Oregon’s 42-14 win Saturday, his demeanor impressed even Anthony Barr.

“I think people don’t give him enough credit for his toughness and his competitiveness,” the Bruins’ All-American said. “There were a couple of plays where he got hit probably late. I think the one, Jordan (Zumwalt) hit him on the sidelines, and he was actually telling the ref, ‘Don’t throw the flag. That was clean.’

“It’s cool to hear from quarterbacks. Usually, they’re the ones complaining the most.”

Barr himself is no slouch. On Monday, he was named one of 12 semifinalists for the Butkus Award, given annually to the best linebacker in college football. With 13 tackles for loss, six sacks, four forced fumbles and three recoveries, the senior is likely the favorite to win.

It’s nice to see individual Bruins get recognized for achievements and considered for awards, but at this point, all I care about are the wins. Barr, Jack, and the rest of the defense are carrying their share of the load – it’s time the offense stepped back up. I’m tired of seeing sloppy blocking, bounced passes, inability to break tackles, and indecision. Whether or not Hundley truly has a concussion, all the Heisman and draft talk are moot until his performance improves and UCLA wins consistently. It seemed like he had plenty of opportunities vs. Oregon to pick up decent yardage on scrambles when his primary receivers were covered – maybe he’s too intent on making his progressions and staying in the pocket. He is a fine QB, but lately he’s been playing nowhere close to the hype he’s received this season – I’d be interested to see how much of his passing yardage is due to swing passes vs. downfield throws. Until he can consistently make the downfield throws, he doesn’t deserve any Heisman consideration. Tired of hearing him called a dual-threat QB – he is not that quick on his feet.

Sorry for the rant – just frustrated that the defense played so well these past two games while the offense sputtered continuously. Yes, Stanford and Oregon have very good defenses, but it seemed like conservative play-calling and a lack of clutch plays did UCLA in. And I blame the coaches for not being prepared for the fake punt – sure, it was deep in Oregon territory, but it was like the Red Sea parted after the ball was snapped. You could literally have driven a Hummer through the line without hitting a Bruin.

Here’s hoping they don’t overlook a Colorado team that had some good moments moving the ball vs. Arizona last Saturday.

I personally thought his 64 passing yards were respectable

      • EncinitasBruin

I’m impressed that he was able to pass for two yards more than the amount of points ASU scored against the Trojans. But thanks, FtV, for taking the time to post your thoughtful comment.

        • Joe Blow

And 14 more yards than the 50 SC hung on ucla.

      • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

        For a Trojan.

        • Joe Blow

At lease SC won at Autzen.

          • ProbationU

Wish that would have helped Lane. Would love to still see him on the SC sideline, in his visor hiding behind his menu.

          • Joe Blow

That gets old. He also beat you 50-0.

          • ProbationU

Yes. I wish I had a dollar for everytime a Trojan has reminded me. I could retire. I also wish it had a longer shelf life for him.

          • Joe Blow

If I has 5 cents for every time a bRuin said their football program is elite, I’d be richer than Warren Buffet.

          • Guest

I think it is about time the fans take a note from the players…this is an article about respect and praise from one accomplished athlete to another. You can be a supporter of your program without throwing hate at another. Show some class.

          • Joe Blow

You make me laugh. No lower class than you guys. Believe me, it’s always you guys starting the nonsense.

          • Mase

Joe, if you got caught with 5 cents the orderlies would wrestle it away from you and you’d lose your jello for the next 3 days!

          • Mase

If you can learn to spell “Bruin” you may finally achieve a net worth of 5 cents.

          • Joe Blow

The sad part is it would be 5 cents more than your net worth.

          • Mase

Not that this is any of my business (I am a Duck fan), but why do USC fans cling so hard to bygone accomplishment? Because you know you have no future! I followed a link from the ESPN Ducknation site, and low (very low) and behold I run into a Trojan man, eh fan trolling around in a Bruin site. Why can’t Trojan fans find something productive to debate about their own team? You fools spend more time in other people’s kitchen; get some flipping business to tend too. Your sorry underachieving squad is weighing down the PAC 12 strength of schedule. ‘Fight On’ should be changed to ‘Fight Each Other.’ best I can tell…scrubs.

          • Joe Blow

Hey, Duck F..K, you haven’t won ANYTHING! Bama kicked your @$$. F U. When you get ONE ring, give me a call. I’ve got 5!

          • Dan Lyon

exactly how many games has a ring won?

          • Joe Blow

            Yawn.

          • Guest

Ever participate in an elite level? All you guys do is rant and talk BS on internet cause you know you can’t do nothing less or more aside from typing. Grow up and earn some actual medals in real life..stop watching tv and starting being part of it.

          • Joe Blow

Sure have and wearing my RING right now. Where’s your RIBBON?

          • Mase

Joe that isn’t a “ring.” It is a tracking device.

          • Joe Blow

            Give me a break.

          • Mase

You get your break as soon as we’re done putting all the blocks away.

          • Joe Blow

Figures you’d be playing with children. Is your last name McMartin?

          • Mase

Joe…Joe, settle down (and drink a full glass of water with your medication!). I’m just saying, you’re expending way too much energy trying to ruin a UCLA fan’s day with your ignorant rants…it’s not going to work buddy. See, its obvious to UCLA fans that their team is on the uptick; while your team’s future is bleak (to put it lightly!). So what if they lost to Oregon and Stanford, their both top 5 teams and will finish the season as top 5 teams! Mora recruits excellent; Lane and OregonRon (whatever his name is) couldn’t recruit the right player if their life depended on it). We lost to Bama too, when?

          • Joe Blow

We’ll see. You guys were very meek and friendly until you started winning. And turned into huge jerks. Like ucla, you’ve actually done NOTHING. We’ll see big boy. ‘Bama is a commin’ Hope you’re there. But doubt it.

          • Mase

But Joe, this wasn’t about me or UCLA fans being jerks. It was about why you would choose to come over to their site to be a jerk when they weren’t hurling insults toward your team. Perhaps you have encountered some salty Duck fans, but please understand you guys are pompous and annoying yourselves. I feel very confident that this team’s mindset is that they can play with anyone; in fact, I believe that we could have easily beat Auburn but we lacked confidence (particularly Chip’s conservative play calling) and unwittingly conceded to a lesser opponent by not accentuating where we had an advantage: passing the ball. That won’t be an issue this time around! Hate on buddy, but UCLA, OSU, ASU, Stanford, Oregon, and pretty soon Utah and Washington State all consider playing your team just above a bye week.

          • Joe Blow

Never said there aren’t SC A h o l e s. There are. So go ahead and Jabber On! We’re down, but will be back again soon kicking your @$$. BTW, I’ll bet NONE of you win a NC while we’re away. Haven’t yet.

          • Mase

You may very well be back, I mean…you are a historic program. But I doubt it will be soon! Dude, you played 10 walk-on’s in your last game? You fools held on to (slow) Lane too long. As to the you’ll be “kicking your @$$” comment: only thing you’ll be kicking is yourselves for hiring “Slow” so fast!. And when you do restart that flipping jalopy you might want to get rid of that antiquated student body right offense..ish! That ship sailed buddy (I think they called it ‘Titantic”). ‘There is a Fight in the Locker Room’ or whatever tired slogan you guys bore us with.

          • Joe Blow

F U. You’re program over history sux. Don’t care what an idiot like you thinks. YOU are the FOOL

          • Joe Blow

Guess you can eat a big brown one over tonight. hahahahaha Loser
Or was your OSU referring to Ohio State? hahahahahahahahahahaha

          • Mase

Hey Joe, I don’t obsess over USC accomplishments (thank goodness or I would be on the same med’s as you are). But a word of caution for you my friend: In the future, don’t count on every quarterback to throw 2 picks from the goal line for your wins. Son…please seek the proper help!

          • Joe Blow

Starting to sweat? You DO obsess over USC. It’s obvious. And hilarious. How was that crow last night? Medium rare or Well done?

          • Mase

We’ll..you caught me Joe. Man you are sharp! My Ducks are really starting to feel the heat on their little webbed feet from that Trojan torch of victory. Your offense looked amazing last night. Cody K looked like the All Pac12 QB we knew he could be; both lines looked dominant. You guys toyed with Oregon State like a spider on a full belly toys with a disoriented fly. I bet you have the Colorado Buffalo shacking in their hooves now. ‘Fight On for Peace’ (did I get it right this time?). Hopefully its your night to choose the channel next game!

          • Joe Blow

I think you’re spending too much time at the Wild Duck.

          • Mase

Your best one yet Joe! And so succinct (that means brief and to the point) and witty (that means intelligent in a tricky kind of way). But what am I telling you these things for… Can I call you “Oracle”. BTW, that means all-knowing (there I go again!).

          • Joe Blow

And I’m sure you know not to get into a battle of wits half armed.

          • Mase

I gotta work now Joe. I will talk to you after your nap.

          • Joe Blow

Don’t forget to ask if the customer would like fries with their order.

          • Mase

C’mon Joe. The idea of being critically comedic is that you have to come up with an original way of attack. You can’t copy my implying that you’re a nut job by implying that someone creative enough to do so is a fast food worker. BTW, there are a lot of very capable folks working in that arena in this economy so maybe you want to go a different direction? In any even, I quit. No really I do. I think your team should keep Ed Oregeron to be honest. He recruits well and the team seems to be responding to him; and I don’t think it was talent that was ever the problem. As I stated earlier the scheme is a bit outdated (though Stanford runs a similar scheme successfully), but other than that I firmly believe Lane Kiffin created the dysfunction. I don’t look forward to facing a formidable USC team. But at the end of the day I do believe that ‘the rising tide raises all ships.’ As such, the entire PAC12 benefits from a restored USC Trojan football program. Good Luck.

          • Mase

Darn it Joe! You got your capitalization mixed up again. Remember, you start the sentence with the big letters and end the sentence with a period (which looks like this “.”). Joe, we can still take back that certificate!

          • Joe Blow

            Your GED? Noooooooooo

    • EncinitasBruin

If you can’t rant here, where can you rant? My wife, certainly, can only take so much of my kvetching about football… I think all your frustrations are warranted, and you make some excellent points.

      • Joe Blow

        Your wife deserves a medal

  • bruinjoe

Marriota is the best player in college. That dude is amazing.
