UCLA shakes slow start to beat Buffaloes 45-23

Despite letting Colorado stick around for the better part of the first half, UCLA finally started taking some shots downfield for its third conference win.

Our coverage from Saturday night’s 45-23 decision, running in the Sunday edition of the Los Angeles Daily News and other LANG papers:

– My story on Brett Hundley’s good-not-great showing against Colorado.
– Vinny Bonsignore called the Colorado game a trap for UCLA, one it wiggled out of following hyped-up visits to Stanford and Oregon.
– Jill Painter pointed out UCLA’s seven first-half penalties, leading Jim Mora to indirectly call her a “Debbie Downer.”
– A notebook on UCLA’s success in using true freshmen, including Cameron Judge’s big forced fumble.

Disagree with your assessment of Hundley’s performance as “good but not great” tonight, Jack. Rather, I would call 79% comp / 345 total yards / 4 TDs / 0 INTs a “great but not perfect” performance. His reads were better, he hit some nice mid-range passes and the deep ball to Fuller, and played with confidence. I was also heartened to see Thigpen get into the endzone, and bring the speed–man, we have missed that. Also, very exciting to have James in the rotation again, and Malcolm Jones, in a brief cameo, with a nice run. Game ball goes to BH and our baby-faced OL.

Jack, your assessment of Hundley was spot on. Brett showed some very bright spots but the pressure on him was next to nothing. (The young line did a fantastic job, but it was Colorado). This game should give Brett more confidence but he will get a lot more pressure from the UW, ASU and, yes, even the USC D. BUT….a win is a win!

Surprisingly generous comments JB. I thought we played pretty poorly overall. OL did decent job protecting QB but could not open any holes to run the ball. D played very uninspired. $C looks like the better team at this time. We need to win out to have a decent year but I am not liking those odds at this point.
