Could Jim Mora leave UCLA for Washington?

USC’s hire of Steve Sarkisian has already opened up speculation that Washington is gunning for UCLA’s Jim Mora. I broke down all the reasons he has to stay in Los Angeles in the Daily News, but for simplicity’s sake, I’ll list both sides now.

The case for UW: Alma mater, better facilities (including a new, on-campus stadium).
The case for UCLA: Two-year foundation already built, natural recruiting advantages, family settling in (son at Claremont McKenna, father in Palm Springs), weather, not having to coach against Myles Jack.

As for the murmurs placing him in Seattle today, well … one Jim Mora definitely was.

He’s as good as gone. Recruits are already starting to jump ship. The UCLA AD better pony up now and give Mora an extension ASAP or they will lose more recruits.

    • BruinAZ

      You wish!! No chance.

      • ProbationU

The Crapper just can’t stand a little competition. They get their a$$es handed to them and rather than hire a good coach, they root for ours to leave. Weak!

        • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

That’s how far Troy has fallen.

    • Joe Blow

You are right on Capper. Mora is house hunting as we speak. Hundley to NFL and the rats are jumping off the ship. Why would Lessa want to stay in a town where his program will always be second fiddle when he can FINALLY get his DREAM job?

      • NonAlumBruin

You are hilarious. You might be a lunatic. Fix your avatar.

        • Dominick King

I couldn’t agree more with you NonAlumBruin, Mora is smart to stay with UCLA he have a better chance of winning now then with Wsahington

          • The Capper

One thing we will agree on is that Mora is smart. Be that as it may, he knows that the golden days of local recruits falling into his lap are long gone. With a new coach that has a personality and sanctions done in a year, he actually has competition in LA for talent. He has easier days in Seattle and they can pay him a lot more than a public university that values basketball over football.

          • ProbationU

Once again, the Crapper is spewing stupidity. Football draws a lot more fans and makes a lot more money at UCLA than basketball, and it’s not even close. Guerrero is certainly not a great AD, but I think he can do math well enough to figure out how to keep Mora. Enjoy 7 win Steve. A very inspiration choice.

          • The Capper

UCLA is a basketball school first. Look where your alums and boosters put their money: the Wooden Center. That’s why your FB practice facilities are crap, you don’t even have a 100 yd practice field and your stadium is 100 miles away. You are hoping that these don’t make a difference to Mora, but they do. When he leaves for UW your AD Chubs is going to hire another coach that let’s his players Hop The Wall. Sucks to be you.

    • The Capper

From the bottom? UCLA only had one more win than Washington. If that mean UW is at the bottom then UCLA isn’t far of…hence another reason why Mora jumps ship.

U$C hires a mediocre coach, and all of TroGan nation can only hope that Mora bolts for UW.

Face it, if Mora stays, UCLA will continue to rise. The next two years, at a minimum, look pretty rosy for UCLA.

        • gotroy22

      • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

That’s why you keep pining for Mora to leave.

  • The Capper

Great quote from the LA Times:
“UCLA’s only official comment came from a school spokesman who said, “Jim Mora is our football coach.” However, a person familiar with the situation said the Mora-to-Washington scenario is one that UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero has feared since USC fired Lane Kiffin as coach in September. The person spoke anonymously because of a lack of authorization to speak publicly about the matter.”

The recruiting boards are also lit up with recruits adding USC to their short list and taking a “wait and see approach” to the Gutty Little Bruin Nation.

We don’t know what will happen, and maybe Mora will indeed jilt UCLA and leave for UW. But what you wrote here indicates that UCLA’s AD has been able to plan for months to financially persuade Mora to stay. If Mora decided he wanted to go to UW no matter how much UCLA paid him, then indeed UCLA would be out of luck. We shall find out soon, given the time pressures for hiring coaches and recruiting.

From all indications last night and this morning, from talking to recruits, etc., Jim Mora is not leaving #UCLA

        More wishful thinking.

Your and Joe’s constant squeaking about Mora leaving shows his value as a coach …

        … and your desperation.

        • The Capper

Is there really any question whether is good or not? The guy is a good coach, not great, but good. If he wasn’t, the Dawgs at UW wouldn’t be drooling all over themselves.

          • ProbationU

And licking their own ba!!s like Dawgs do. But it simply isn’t happening. Mora will have new deal within 24 hours.

  • QTran

Don’t know about Mora leaving this year after what he said after the SC game about players sticking around but for sure some of the other coaches are interviewing.

    • The Capper

You’re saying Mora wouldn’t have reacted out of emotion? Nah, he’s not like that. He and his father are always thoughtful communicators.

      • MattMattwiles26

Anyone see Ronnie Lott on PAC-12 Network…whining about how Mora showed a lack of class by celebrating at the collie the way he did…Myopia is alive and well across town…and they hate UCLA blowing them out like WE did…funny, I thought Mora could have put up more points but held back…showing much more class than SUC could even fathom.

    • 92104bruinfan

Saxon of ESPNLA b*tched about the same thing…one thing to come from a SC alum but quite another from a supposedly neutral beat writer. Carroll had no problem running up the scores on conference foes back in the day. Let ‘em eat dirt. Go Bruins!

They were great about continually rubbing 50-0 in everyone’s face…but when the tables are turned are the first to whine about somebody rubbing it in . A bit of a joke.

They just don’t get it. Still complaining about Harbaugh going for 2. Hilarious. I saw Carroll up on Arkansas 63-7 and throwing for another touchdown to win 70-7. What was his deal? If you want to dish it out, learn to take it.

        • gotroy22

I thought it was even more of a facial in 2009 when Pete had Matt throw that long bomb in the last seconds up 21-7. The guttie fans sitting near me flipped out when that happened.

Yeah, I hear you. I’m just amazed Cal is still on his list. With the state of their program right now, why would a 5-star recruit go there?

I wouldn’t bet on him going to Cal for that reason. Plus, they throw the ball all the time.

  • Brewins

I LOVE how all the USC trolls have to talk about is the hypothetical scenario they’ve made up in their tiny little minds where Mora bolts to UW. Whatever they need to take the sting out of the 35-14 loss they suffered to a “terrible program” that has now beaten their bums two years in a row. Talk all they want about who is leaving or staying and how recruits are cutting UCLA out of the picture but they’re only trying to get over the loss, which is the only thing that matters, we played you in football and we beat you, SUC it!

How could Mora recruit for UCLA knowing he was going to leave IF he was going to leave? I don’t see it. Too much integrity. He’s not like some Carroll cast-off.

  • BruinInSeattle

BESIDES…it would be fun as heck for the hyper-competitive Mora to compete against his good buddy, Suck, in the hotbed of Los Angeles college football. Going to UW would be a step backwards, as Suck undoubtably proved by vacating the job at UDub.
