Myles Jack doubles up on Pac-12 freshman of the year awards

Talk about versatility. Today, UCLA’s Myles Jack was named both Pac-12 Defensive and Offensive Freshman Player of the Year — becoming the first to take both since the awards were introduced in 2008.

The linebacker/running back earned a starting spot on defense by the Bruins’ second game, and finished the season tied for fourth on the team with 70 tackles. His 10 pass breakups ranked second in the Pac-12, and first nationally among linebackers.

Pressed into action on offense after a slew of tailbacks went down with injury, Jack debuted with a six-carry, 120-yard performance at Arizona. He followed that performance with a four-touchdown showing against Washington.

Over the Bruins’ final four regular season games, the 6-foot-1, 225-pound freshman rushed for 267 yards and seven touchdowns on 37 carries.

UCLA also had all-conference first-teamers in linebacker Anthony Barr — beat out by Arizona State’s Will Sutton for Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year — and offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo. Jack was named to the second-team defense, while junior Ryan Hofmeister earned a second-team special teams mention.

The Bruins’ honorable mentions: C Jake Brendel, So.; ST Jayon Brown, Fr.; P Sean Covington, Fr.; TE Thomas Duarte, Fr.; WR Shaq Evans, Sr.; WR Devin Fuller, So.; DB Randall Goforth, So.; QB Brett Hundley, So.; DB Anthony Jefferson, Jr.; LB Eric Kendricks, Jr.; DL Cassius Marsh, Sr.; DL Ellis McCarthy, So.; DB Fabian Moreau, So.; OL Alex Redmond, Fr.; DL Eddie Vanderdoes, Fr.; LB Jordan Zumwalt, Sr.

    Congrats to Myles. Well deserved…

Jack, any chance Mora considers the UW job?

    • kiriba08

If Mora is a good poker player he will make it known that Udub is making overtures and then negotiate with Dan G to get more money for his staff and perhaps a sweeter deal for himself.

        • kiriba08

With the recent signs of real life in our Bruin football program, Dan G should not have much trouble hitting the boosters up for enough $ to keep Mora & the staff in place (even given the $50M currently being raised for the new football facility)

    • Jack Wang

I doubt it, but he likely leverages for more an extension and more pay for his assistants, as kiriba08 said.

  • kiriba08

Look for Udub to make a run at Mora.

      That would be a disaster.

  • NonAlumBruin

I had forgotten that he is a freshman. Congratulations to Miles.

Will Sutton? So the guy has a down year with only three sacks and he still wins POY? I know tackles are more defensive run stoppers, but come on! AB got ROBBED…..AGAIN!

  • Bruin 34

You F!cking shi!!ing me!!?? Sutton wins defensive player of the year? I wonder if the pac 12 refs voted in this. Horrible call! Smh.

  • Bruin 34

I guess Christmas does come early. I love Haden! Great hire Suc!

  • LTEfan

Myles is great, but how could he possibly win offensive freshman of the year over players who played full time, for the entire 12 game season, on offense? For example, QB Jared Goff of Cal? He was a true freshman and put up impressive passing numbers.

    • anno nimus

      I agree.

  • kiriba08

Having DeShawn Foster as the actual, real time RB coach next year should help…also, that does not hurt at all as far as recruiting RBs i concerned.

Tho UCLA only had two first team selections (Barr and Sua’Filo) and one second team selection (Jack), the Bruins had 16 honorable mentions (most in the Pac) with 11 of them freshmen or sophomores. How is that for a young and deep talent pool on the roster? Still a bowl game to go to send off the seniors on a high note as well as go into off-season with some positive vibes but hard not to get excited about the 2014 season with most of the tough games at home in the RB. Go Bruins!
