Jim Mora reels off ‘insane’ 40-yard dash times after UCLA pro day

According to the UCLA head coach Jim Mora, these were the 40-yard dashes his players clocked during Tuesday’s on-campus pro day:

LB Anthony Barr, 4.45 (official combine time 4.66)
WR Shaq Evans, 4.32 (4.51)
DE Cassius Marsh, 4.68 (4.89)
LB Jordan Zumwalt, 4.61 (4.76)
RB Damien Thigpen, 4.36
S Stan McKay, 4.38
RB Malcolm Jones, 4.57
DB Brandon Sermons, 4.39
OL Xavier Su’a-Filo, 4.88
DE Keenan Graham, 4.66
DL Seali’i Epenesa, 5.16

A pair of 2013 prospects also returned to work out …
Aaron Hester, 4.37
Jerry Johnson, 4.31

Assuming those are accurate, six players — including two who have been out of competitive football for a year — clocked sub-4.40 times at Spaulding Field. As a reference point, there were just seven sub-4.40 times at the NFL combine last month.

“People are going to hear that and go, ‘That’s insane. You don’t have that many fast guys,'” Mora said. “But once again, these are electronic times. If I were out there scouting, I’d be like, ‘Ehh, I don’t know about that.’ But once again, those are pretty true times.”

OK, then.

Too bad most of the Pro Scouts were over at SC watching Spring Practice.

Do the Trojans need more practice at losing to UCLA?

      • NOBSisdaMAN

Maybe if ucla could win a Natty in FB, but not now.

        • ProbationU

In 2 years they might have a reason to be there….unless they are going to take one of your new freshmen to Fiji.

          • NOBSisdaMAN

I’d bet you the WORLD that ucla WILL NOT win a Natty of any kind in 2 years.

          • Demosthenes

Ah, if only you actually owned the world so you could make that bet.

          • ProbationU

You own the world now? Interesting. Did I say we would win a Natty in 2 years? I will say that if a team in LA wins a Natty in the next 2 years, it is more likely to be UCLA. Sark needs a few years to get SC up to speed. So, what I said was that the scouts don’t have all that much to look at over on Figueroa just yet, but in 2 years they should have. It wasn’t even a dig NOBS/Blow/Lowe. Most of your draft-able talent already declared for the league.

Didn’t realize Pro Scouts watch water polo spring practice because those are the only SC athletes worth anything over the past several years.

      • NOBSisdaMAN

Oh really? What NCs have you won other than baseball, with a Trojan coach?

        • Demosthenes

Um… 11 national basketball titles…. how many of those does SC have?

        • ProbationU

Just because Savage was an assistant once at SC, doesn’t make him a Trojan. He had a chance to return and stayed a Bruin. SC threw a ton of cash at him and he still didn’t want to be a Trojan again.

Given that UCLA has 110 Natty’s…I don’t think they were because of Trojan coaches. Glenn Bassett, Andy Banachowski, Jim Bush to name a few. Bush later went to SC…so you could say they tried to find some Bruin magic.

“Electronic” in and of itself means nothing in terms of accuracy… anyone with a track background can tell you that. Almost surely he was doing hand-start, electronic-finish. Unless he had an auto-start apparatus (i.e. pressure pad starting blocks, etc. which is unlikely) some sort of manual-start had to be used. This system is VERY “fast” relative to your true time per accepted Fully Automatic Timing (FAT).

Unless he was using a FAT system, which he has NOT indicated he was, then these times are virtually worthless… in fact possibly even more inaccurate than fully hand timed. Just some food for thought.

From the headline, I was anxious to see what Mora’s 40 dash time was.
