Defensive end Eddie Vanderdoes breaks foot, will miss UCLA’s spring practices

For at least the next few months, UCLA will be without a key part of its defensive line: rising star Eddie Vanderdoes.

Head coach Jim Mora said on a Bruin Report Online podcast that Vanderdoes broke a bone in his foot and will be out for spring. The Bruins start practicing on April 1 and will hold their “Spring Showcase” on April 26.

The former five-star recruit started seven games as in 2013, logging 39 tackles — including 4.5 for loss — and landing on multiple Freshman All-American lists.

Vanderdoes is a likely starter at defensive end this fall, with senior Owamagbe Odighizuwa and nose tackle Kenny Clark manning the other two first-string spots. Rising junior Ellis McCarthy can back up multiple positions.
