Atlanta Falcons looking to hire UCLA’s Jeff Ulbrich as assistant

On National Signing Day, UCLA might be at risk of losing one of its best recruiters.

FOX Sports reported that the Atlanta Falcons are hiring Jeff Ulbrich — who just finished his first season as the Bruins’ defensive coordinator — as a linebackers coach.

However, a source indicated that Ulbrich going to the Falcons is not a done deal. The 37-year old worked as UCLA’s linebackers coach and special teams coordinator for two seasons before being promoted in 2014.

Ulbrich has spoken highly about both UCLA head coach Jim Mora and newly hired Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn, calling both tremendous influences on his defensive philosophy.

The reports could already have significant ramifications on the Bruins’ 2015 recruiting class. Four-star linebacker Roquan Smith committed to UCLA over Georgia on ESPNU this morning, but has not sent in his national letter of intent. The Montezuma, Ga., native called Ulbrich a significant factor in his recruitment.

Smith’s coach at Macon County, Larry Harold, confirmed to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Ulbrich’s uncertain status was what held up the commitment.

“We just got off the phone with Ulbrich,” Harold told the AJC. “He said he hasn’t signed any papers with the Falcons. So he talked to Roquan, and he let him know that he was going to check into everything and get back to him. …

“That’s what his decision to UCLA came down to – Roquan’s relationship with Ulbrich. That’s what it came down to as the difference between UGA and UCLA. He has been there since the first day. Recruiting is about the relationships. It always comes down to the relationships.”

Dear Jeff Ulbrich, please don’t accept the Falcon’s offer. You may not realize this but you are sitting pretty with Mora. Just focus on improving the D at UCLA and doing your best as our DC and in time… after a championship or two, you and Mora and the rest of the staff will get your NFL offers. Mulitiple offers. And some day if you or Mora chooses to go to the NFL you will be better equipped, more experienced, more reputable, and much more valuable. Something special is “Bruin” at UCLA and you should be a big part of that.

Disagree – fire Ulbrich ASAP. The new Atlanta HC, who Ulbrich previously worked for, was hired by Atlanta prior to the SB. To say Ulbrich had no prior inclination/intention to take the Falcons job is ludicrous.

Ulbrich was well aware of what he was doing when recruited R. Smith, and what really smarts is Mora was probably aware of U’s subterfuge. Bottom Line, Mr. Smith gets screwed, UCLA loses another important recruit and UCLA’s reputation gets a Black eye.

If UCLA had been up front, Mr. Alexander wouldn’t have flipped.

Fire Ulrich ASAP – he deserves it. Ulrich wants teenager’s to commit but doesn’t want to commit himself.

Mora and Ulbrich played those kids. That’s dirty. Instead of being honest ucla may lose Smith and Wicker. And I’m hearing some of the signed defensive players want out.

          Sources?

Yes, but I’ve been on the web all day and can’t remember. Trust me. It was on sportspyder earlier.

Not sure whether you either work for Bruins Nation or are an SC troll. Same thing anyway, I guess.

Hey give JG a big Hickey wil ya.

        • UCLA owns LA Football

saspool, I agree completely that Mora and Ulbrich did in fact lie to Mr. Smith for recruiting purposes. I don’t know about the signed players who want to leave, but I think Mora should resign.

The very Idea that good friend (Quinn) would Mora call on National LOI day, even as a courtesy, with and oh BTW I want to offer your DC Ulbrich a coaching position with the Falcon’s – Who needs enemies with friends like that.

          • sas

Well…I have to say I’m surprised that you did not argue with me about my comments.

          • UCLA owns LA Football

Why, just because I’m a UCLA fan. Mora and Ulbrich clearly duped a recruit for FB reasons.

I guess what I’m saying is: I would rather recruit fair than utilize cheap CS subterfuge to dupe UCLA FB recruits. Mora and Ulbrich need to go.

          • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

Mora’s stated repeatedly over the last three seasons that he’s committed to the players he recruits; it does not seem likely that he would either tolerate or support one of his staff betraying their trust.

You need more facts before you condemn Mora.

          • UCLA owns LA Football

You have a point Santiago, but if as Mora contents Quinn called last night 2/3 with the heads up, it stands to reason, that everything with Ulbrich’s hand on it, was suspect.

Mora should have mentioned to Smith, prior to his commitment, that Ulbrich was contemplating a position with the Falcons.

That way Smith’s unhappy family and Georgia Univ. wouldn’t have had ammo to launch a successful counter pincer movement.

In short, Santiago, Mora had plenty of time to make clear UCLA’s interest and Ulbrich possible future to U’s recruits. It’s a terrible example of UCLA, M and U injudicious culpability.

Therefore this recruiting mess is a Mora and Ulbrich ugly production, and I’m sorry Santiago, M and U deserve to be fired.

Mora should have mentioned to Smith, prior to his commitment, that Ulbrich was contemplating a position with the Falcons.

That’s a good point, especially in Smith’s case.

Do you know how many other players who signed today signed because of Ulbrich?

I’ll reserve judgment until I have more facts, but you’re persuading me.

Except that Ulbrich started recruiting Smith two years ago, which was his job and he was doing his job until recruiting was done. It’s a dirty deal when you recruit kids and leave, but all assistant coaches leave at some point. As for Defensive Coordinators, we have the money to upgrade. Frustrating timing though.
Would have thought the Frickin Falcons could have waited a while.

        • UCLA owns LA Football

I just can’t believe Ulbrich and Quinn never spoke or considered a possible Ulbrich Falcon position between the time Quinn was hired (prior to the SB) and when Quinn was introduced to the Media.

      • BruinInSeattle

Wow. I hope your anger has had a chance to subside since your tirade. Ulbrich should be fired? For what? Advancing his career? Knowing he had tensions with the head coach and he’d rather depart as friends? Something else equally valid? And come on…you’re blaming him for recruiting a kid when someday he might leave? No one stays anywhere forever, does that mean no one should ever recruit otherwise they could one day be accused of “subterfuge” and abandoning a recruit? that’s ridiculous. who cares if Ulbrich was going to leave or not — I doubt he even knew, if it even mattered — that the kid would say he wouldn’t come if his bromance with Ulbrich was broken…besides, he’s just using him as an excuse for his own indecision. It’s not like Mora is leaving. And anyway, you commit to a team, not a coach. Hundley stayed when Neuheisel was fired. Ulbrich is a good guy. He can do what he wants and I’ll be he has been honorable about it — it was the Falcons that created the situation and UGA that took advantage of it. I sincerely believe Ulbrich was offered something and like any sane human being, was giving it some serious thought. Nothing wrong with that. And he probably hasn’t made up his mind, doesn’t know what to do. And being a smart guy, he probably knows better than to say anything until he was completely sure what he wanted to do. Just because the Falcons made an offer, doesn’t mean Ulbrich had to make a decision…even if he was approached before the SB (which was less than a week ago and still freaking hurts like you wouldn’t believe), I’m sure he was given time to mull things over but didn’t really have the time before National Signing Day. So he was waiting to make up his mind and then make an announcement if he was going to take it or not and not say anything (other than probably to Mora) that he was approached and turned it down. Give the guy some credit. you may disagree with his schemes on the field, but he wears his emotions on his sleeve. This isn’t the type of guy who is slick and only out for himself.

  • WEB_Dupree

So is Roquan Smith going to flip to the Falcons to follow Ulbrich?

  • Tommy B Low Us

I am kind of sad to see coach brick do this. If he does go I wonder if nick allioti would coach again?? Might be a good candidate.
