UCLA’s Kenny Young credits Scott White for his recruitment

Scott White was officially promoted to UCLA linebackers coach and special teams coordinator last month, but his effect on the football program stretches back well before that.

As a member of the staff assisting with the linebackers, White was a key figure in the recruitment of many recent Bruin newcomers. As a four-star recruit out of Louisiana, Kenny Young had 35 tackles in his debut season. The 6-foot-1, 230-pounder started six games, and credited White for discovering him early.

“Scotty? Coach Scott was the first one to recruit me, actually,” Young said. “He reached out to me before (UCLA) even offered me. He just kept it real with me from the jump. … That first meeting was like, ‘You can come here, Kenny. You can be something special. You can come help us out, an opportunity to start as a freshman.’

“That hit it right on. I was like, ‘OK, I could go with that.’ As the process went on, I felt strong about what he was saying, and I just went with it. Here I am today.”
