VIDEO: Jim Mora talks after UCLA’s fourth spring practice

Jim Mora talked on Monday evening after UCLA’s fourth spring practice, touching on defensive end Takkarist McKinley sitting out with a swollen eye, Josh Rosen’s first day running with the first-team offense, the development of left tackle Conor McDermott.

I would like to hope Connor McDermott is an example of how it’s important at times to take these types of 2 star O line recruits. My philosophy has always been the “star” rating system is mostly about “how ready” is one coming out of high school at their projected college position.

McDermott was an O line guy with a tight end body. He did the right thing and UCLA did the right thing by not only grey shirting him but also redshirting him. They allowed him time to mature and grow stronger. The one mistake though was having to play him as a redshirt freshman. He ended up getting injured which slowed down his progress.

There are a group of Bruin fans over on BruinGold from the past who said it was more important to take a 3 or 4 star tailback even if there is an abundance of them over some supposed “second tier” type offensive linemen despite a massive projected shortage that exists. All I can say is that any fan who doesn’t focus in on linemen doesn’t know what they are talking about related to football.

It’s important to redshirt as many linemen as possible also for UCLA. Not every lineman needs to be a 4 or 5 star recruit and play as a true frosh.
