Five-star running back Soso Jamabo enrolls at UCLA

Five-star running back Soso Jamabo has enrolled as a Bruin, according to the UCLA Registrar’s Office.

One of the top recruits in the class of 2015, the Dallas-area native had been arrested on April 19 in Kemp, Texas, for fleeing the police in a vehicle. Head coach Jim Mora had declined to comment on Jamabo’s status back then, saying that he didn’t have all the necessary information.

However, Mora also vouched for the teenager’s character during an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show on April 27.

“I’m sure there were some less-than-great decisions being made,” he said. “I can tell you he’s a great kid. He’s a wonderful kid. He hadn’t had any problems in the past. I support him. We support him. But we have to leave it up to the authorities to decide what the process is going to be.

“I think one thing that it does is that it taught our kids on our team a great lesson: No matter who you are, where you are — if you’re a college athlete, a professional athlete, you are under the spotlight. You are under scrutiny at all times.”

Kemp police chief Robert Walker said in an April statement that Jamabo drove a Ford pick-up at a “high rate of speed” and swerved with “total disregard of public safety.” Occupants also threw objects out of the window. After the truck stopped, the three others in the vehicle were cited and released.

The Kaufman County district clerk’s office said that Jamabo was never indicted following his arrest in April, and that no details about his case appear in the court system except the location of that arrest. The district attorney’s office declined to provide any additional information.

Bruin Report Online first reported Jamabo’s arrival in Los Angeles.
