UCLA players weigh in on freshman quarterback Josh Rosen

Jim Mora announced last Wednesday that Josh Rosen would be UCLA’s starting quarterback. A day later, Rosen and backup Jerry Neuheisel talked about how they each took the decision.

This week, their teammates shared some of their thoughts.

Linebacker Myles Jack, to Sports Illustrated’s Campus Rush: “Don’t be surprised if Josh wins the Heisman. I believe in Josh. Josh is going to be great. Nobody needs to worry about Josh. … Josh is really a cool guy, very about his business, very serious. I like his swagger on the field. He’s not really rattled. Like you can run your mouth at him and he’ll just kind of look at you and smile.”

Center Jake Brendel: “There’s spurts of greatness in him. There’s spurts in greatness in everyone on this team. The coaching staff must have seen those things and decided to go with him. … He’s very intelligent. That’s one of the great attributes about him. … The one thing we might do is we might meet once a week, just him and I. Just sit down and talk about our upcoming game, or the past game that we played. Just talk about where we can fix things, what we can do to prevent things from happening.”

Receiver Jordan Payton: “It’s great that he’s named the starter. I’m excited. He’s definitely a kid that has — the upside is just incredible. He’s definitely going to be a special player here. … Josh’s potential is up there. I don’t want to name-drop names, but he’s up there with the best, physically. Now for him, it’s about developing a great mindset. It’s all mental.”

Running back Paul Perkins: “He definitely has a good grasp of the concepts offensively. I feel like he tried to bond with the team. He tried to get all the players.”

Linebacker Deon Hollins: “The great thing about Josh is just how smart he is already. A lot of times, freshmen, they got on the field — their mind is wandering. Big lights, big crowd, college football. He’s just so focused all the time. I feel like that’s what really separates him from other freshmen. He’s tremendously smart and talented.”
