Perception is everything when it comes to holding penalties. Do you think that these new flex fit uniforms make it harder for refs to see holding penalties? I think hollins gets held constantly and it just does not look as bad with the tight flex fit uniforms.

    • Sandy Underpants

Ask Jim Mora if we can wear throwbacks from the late 80s. Those big jerseys were awesome.

  • Nick Martin

Rosen completely mismanaged the clock during the victory formation giving Cal an extra possession at the end of the game, should this be attributed to freshman learning experience or should the coaches be blamed for not emphasizing the details. It’s fortunate the outcome of the game wasn’t in doubt!

  • Laker Rod

Mr. Wang. Why doesn’t UCLA recruit more linemen. I went back to the 2012 class for Utah. They took 16 linemen in that class. 8 offensive linemen and 8 defensive linemen. Out of these 16 linemen only 2 were rated as 4 stars. Here is the list per Rivals:

    O Line:
    1. JJ Dielman 6’4 240 3 star
    2. Lio Lafaele 6’4 315 3 star
    3. Zach Lindsay 6’7 250 3 star
    4. Carlos Lozano 6’8 360 3 star JC
    5. Hiva Lutui 6’3 284 3 star
    6. Nua Potecki 6’5 310 2 star
    7. Cedrick Poutasi 6’5 322 4 star
    8. Marc Pouvave 6’5 315 3 star JC

    D Line:
    1. Hunter Dimick 6’4 250 DE 3 star. He had 10 sacks last year and is creating havoc this year. He redshirted also
    2. Moses Falauhola 6’0 250 DE 2 star
    3. Koliniasi Leota 6’5 275 DE 3 star JC
    4. Tenny Palepoi 6’2 291 DT 3 star
    5. Visesio Salt 6’3 340 DT 4 star JC
    6. Pasoni Tasini 6’4 245 DE 2 star
    7. Sione Tupouata 6’4 255 DE 3 star
    8. Vaha Vainuku 6’3 295 DT 3 star

They have 4 juniors and 1 senior as their starting O line it appears in 2015.

A few of the guys are from this class and since some were JC transfers they are no longer with Utah as of 2015. Some of the frosh from this class don’t appear to have materialized either which is to be expected. Oh…Kylie Fitts is with Utah also and is part of the two deep at DE.

Maybe you can make a list of all the true Freshmen that USC played tonight in laying waste to the players you listed above. True freshman Cameron Smith picked off Senior QB Travis Wilson 3 times. I just don’t know how to square all of that with your lists and your philosophy of sitting (almost) all true freshmen.

      • Laker Rod

This is a Q&A section. Quit messing it up for Mr. Wang.

You’ve just proven also how uneducated you are when it comes to true frosh vs upper classmen. It’s about “consistency”. Anything can happen in one game. Utah is still leading the South.

Heck…UCLA even beat Arizona last year but they still failed to win the Pac-12 South. Do you understand any of this?

Take it offline also…don’t need you polluting this Q&A section. I asked a question to Mr. Wang.

        • j metaphor

          Back off 88 !
We all know L Rod is always right.
If you don’t believe me, just ask him.

        • 88 Straight

I am sure Me. Wang can answer your question without your assistance and without your shopping list.

          • Laker Rod

You’re the one who butted in dummy. It’s so obvious.

          • 88 Straight

List on, Little Rodney. I guess you could have just asked a simple question about whether or not Wang thought UCLA has been recruiting enough linemen without your little editorial. A question isn’t a statement. It is asked in pursuit of knowledge which you need not pursue because you know it all.

          • Laker Rod

The question is there for Mr. Wang. You just butt in as usual. Proven right here. Want to get away?

    • jameskatt

Out of the 119 Players on UCLA’s Roster, we have the following linemen:
      – 19 Freshmen/Redshirt Freshmen
      – 6 Sophomore
      – 13 Junior/Redshirt Junior
      – 1 Redshirt Senior Lineman

So looks like we have been stocking up on Linemen.
And 33% of the players on the team are Linemen.

      • 88 Straight

Don’t confuse him with facts. We had a banner year in recruiting for the OL this past year. Our bigger need at the moment is on the defensive line. The defensive line is of critical importance in this class.

Offensive line would be fine with a class of 2-3 quality players. Klemm started out behind in that area with the suspension.

        • EncinitasBruin

I have to admit, 88, I do get a chuckle out of you and LR trading barbs. Maybe it’s because I am now a “man of a certain age” and I, myself, am getting a bit surly in my “later middle age.”

          • 88 Straight

I’m certainly not young. I would guess I am close in age or older than you. I love it when someone suggests playing less talented players because of a pre-determined idea that the team won’t win the league.

Coaches and competitors don’t think that way. They have a commitment to win EVERY game. LR plans for failure today in the hope that it will build success in the future. it is a thought process that de-values the commitment of your upperclassmen.

      • Laker Rod

How many of what you listed are walk ons. Please don’t distort what is actually occurring.

        • jameskatt

Adrian Klemm has been focused on recruiting linemen since coaching at UCLA. And my impression has been this has improved compared to the Neuheisel years.

          • Laker Rod

Is this really saying much? Improving over what Neuheisel did is/was easy. There is a lack of both defensive tackles and offensive linemen for the 2016 class.

          • Laker Rod

Is it really saying much…saying it’s improved compared to the Neuheisel years? That was easy. We have to remember also…RN was responsible for getting Hundley, Owa, Kendricks, Anthony Barr, Jordan Zumwalt, etc. Did he sacrifice some linemen for some skill position guys?

Just focus in on the now and present please. We are lacking defensive tackles and offensive linemen for the 2016 class.

  • MPPBruin

Can you talk about what makes Kenny Clark special? He doesn’t pile up huge sack numbers. What are the traits he possesses that make him so valuable?

    • 92104bruinfan

Clark is a house wrecker who routinely commands double teams. He’s listed as 1st round NFL draft selection on virtually every projected 2016 draft board.

  • jameskatt

How is Adrian Klemm doing? We haven’t heard much about him since the suspensions. He is a key and top recruiter for UCLA’s offensive line. And he is the coach for the offensive line and running game.

  • jameskatt

Any update on Isaako Savaiinaea’s health? Jim Mora wasn’t optimistic about Isaako’s leg injury.

    • 88 Straight

High ankle sprain. Out a few weeks.

      • MPPBruin

Need him back by the utah game. Don’t rush it.

  • jameskatt

Any update on Devin Fuller’s health? He looked like he left the last game with a concussion.

  • jameskatt

The offense moved much more effectively against Cal than on previous games. The pace seems far more rapid. What did Noel Mazzone do to improve the offense?

  • jameskatt

For any top team to keep winning despite injuries, depth is crucial. Ohio State won the championship with their third string quarterback. USC walloped Utah behind freshman linebacker Cam Smith. Which UCLA offensive and defensive players can step up their games to take UCLA to the top?

    • 88 Straight

Isaako has stepped up and now he is injured. Aaron Wallace stepped up big time last game. John Johnson stepped up. Tahaan Goodman played some linebacker as well. There are players to step up and hopefully Bradley can scheme to fit the personnel. If the DBs continue to cover will in man-to-man that opens up a lot of things.

      • EncinitasBruin

Considering the fact that Wallace was thinking about transferring a year ago, that’s a dramatic turn of events. He was a nightmare for Goff, with 2.5 sacks. Just hope we don’t lose any more LBs–don’t want Lucier-South to have to burn his RS.

    Jack:

Do you have worries about your job security? Ever since you took over for john gold, it seems like no one reads this blog anymore. This place used to have tons of comments in the comments section, but never anymore. I thought you guys were judged on clicks.

    • EncinitasBruin

This one man’s opinion is that Jack has really stepped up his posts and content in the past year. I’m seeing more posts and more energy here.

    • jameskatt

Jack has done a fantastic job. His analysis of games is excellent. He has done a great job including social media. The only concern I have is that Jack may graduate to a better position. But then that is what we wish for everyone.

    • Sandy Underpants

Yeah, bring back that girl that would fill in for like 3 days when Jon Gold was on a bender, and then she would get flamed to death and cry. Those were the glory years of this blog… Those 3 days.

      • EncinitasBruin

Alirght, that’s funny. I do remember that poor gal–didn’t have thick enough skin for the sports journalist’s trade… How do you remember this stuff, Sandy?

        • johnny chingas

          those were pretty funny days….

  • max

Now that Utah has posted its first league loss, what do you think the Bruin’s chances are of winning the Pac-12 South?

    • EncinitasBruin

The game we can’t let down on is WSU. Perfect trap game at home, right before we face Utah and then SC.

      • 88 Straight

Can’t afford any let downs and our D-backs need to play every game as well as they did against Cal. That gives Bradley the opportunity to be creative.

    • Sandy Underpants

      34%

    • jameskatt

The Bruins have to win the rest of their games – including Utah and USC. USC showed us the way to beat Utah. And hopefully the players can show up ready, aggressive, and willing to play a winning hard-hitting game against USC. This run is doable. But everyone has to step up and play sharp.

      • Michael Johnston Sr.

Not only win out, but Arizona St. has to lose one also!

        • 88 Straight

Not necessarily. If Utah loses to UCLA and wins the rest it would be a 3 way tie. UCLA wins the tiebreaker in that scenario with the best record inside the South Division.

  • 88 Straight

Jack, how do you think the rest of the season will play out for our two participants, UCLA and Cal for the rest of the year. I assume you follow Cal a little bit as well.

  • Brian J Woo

I think the general consensus is that the Pac12 is one of the top two conferences in the nation. With that being said, do you think a two loss pac 12 champion can make it to the playoff?

    • Sandy Underpants

Even with 3 losses, USC should be able to jump Clemson or TCU with their Pac-12 championship because those two schools are complete jokes, historically, and play in joke conferences currently.

      • EncinitasBruin

Don’t rise to the fly, Brian…. Sandy’s hobby is to see if the large trout in the deep cold waters will rise to bite on her poorly handmade fly…

  • EncinitasBruin

My understanding of the NFL rules is that players can’t be drafted until three years after their high school class graduates. For Rosen, that would mean May ’18, which means UCLA would have him until at least through his junior season. Is that correct? If so, what are the key pieces still missing around him for the Bruins to make a playoff run?

  • EncinitasBruin

Is the fact that Christian McCaffrey, the nation’s all-purpose yardage leader at an ungodly 259.7 YPG, not ranked higher on the Heisman Watch list (he was #9 as of last week) proof of East Coast bias?

  • TK Bruin

What was Mora so hopping mad about at the end of the game? I heard he was yelling at the referees. And aren’t there sanctions that can be issued for coaches that mistreat referees?

    • EncinitasBruin

+1. Not a good look for him when his team is blowing out an opponent and it’s meaningless garbage time…

      • TK Bruin

Totally agree. Also, for a team that gets penalized as much as it does, maybe we should spend more time working with the team on them and less time complaining to refs.

  • miguelito

are you that guy that sang Ricky Martin songs on American Idol? What’s wrong with that Cal team? they play dirty and they’re not very good. Rosen looked WAY better than Goff, your thoughts?

  • Tommy B Low Us

So word is out chris Clark has now parted ways with cuse. I say the Bruins dodge a bullet with that guy. Seriously, what is that guys deal?
