UCLA OG Alex Redmond leaves Bruins, signs with NFL agent

UCLA offensive lineman Alex Redmond has left the team and signed with an NFL agent, head coach Jim Mora said Tuesday.

The junior had been a mainstay on the Bruins’ offensive line ever since he arrived in 2013 as four-star recruit. He started all 13 games at right guard his first season, and was named a Freshman All-American. He started eight games in 2014, and 10 this fall.

The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Redmond will likely risk going undrafted.

His departure leaves the Bruins very thin at guard heading into Saturday’s kickoff against Nebraska in the Foster Farms Bowl. Redshirt sophomore Kenny Lacy is still limited with an ankle injury. Other options for the team are redshirt sophomore Poasi Moala and redshirt freshman Cristian Garcia.

Something has to be going on. So many players seem to be leaving. And the guy decides to skip the bowl game which is always a good showcase for agents? He could’ve done the practices and the game to show his skills, and then leave for the draft. To leave now suggests something is wrong.

    • Just Owns

      Mora, Mora, Mora, of Mora.

    • Laker Rod

Redmond probably wasn’t even starting for the bowl game. It was probably going to be the following anyhow:

      LT – McDermott
      LG – Kenny Lacy
      C – Brendel
      RG – Benenoch
      RT – Miller

I actually believe Kenny Lacy did a better job this season anyhow over Redmond but the coaches seemed to favor Redmond for whatever reason. Maybe because he threatened to leave or got more emotionally down vs that of Lacy?

Also…the above line up also…probably serves better during pass protection but Benenoch at right tackle with Lacy and Redmond at the guard spots seemed to have produced more consistent runs.

With Miller at tackle…Perkins seemed to struggle more getting stopped for no gain or loss of yardage constantly.

But Miller does a good job in pass protection though whether at right or left tackle. Slightly better than Benenoch in pass protection.

      • LTEfan

You may be right, the line may do fine on Sat. But the reports are that Lacy’s ankle injury makes his status uncertain, and that could be a significant problem.

        • Laker Rod

Ughh….didn’t realize that. Then will fall back on the grades issue. Still sad to see Redmond leave.

I’m serious. What’s the deal with UCLA players and leaving early before accomplishing anything. I mean come on. Redmond was only honorable mention all conference. UCLA didn’t even win a division title.

I thought UCLA promotes…”where Champions are made”. What a joke.

I repeat…Jim Mora better start recruiting players who want to be Bruins for life and are committed to winning conference championships even if it means staying all 5 years.

  • gotroy22

First Jack, now Redmond? Did he flunk his finals?

    • Just Owns

Mora, Mora, Mora of Mora. Why would an eligible starting guard leave before a bowl game except at the coach request.

I’ll bet Redmond thought Mora’s preparation and performance at the KU game sucked big time.

      • Laker Rod

I wouldn’t be surprised the reason why Redmond left also because he was going to be benched in favor of Kenny Lacy and Benenoch at guard with McDermott and Miller at the tackle spots for the bowl game.

In addition, with Scott Quessenberry back next year and probably the starting center it seems perhaps Alex Redmond felt he may have been the odd man out and lose his starting position.

Really disappointed in Redmond. He could have worked out at center and put in the extra work and still earn a starting spot at either guard or center.

I have no idea what the coaches are thinking also related to their recruitment of offensive linemen. We are way short. There are only two OL recruits for 2016? What a joke.

        • Just Owns

You’re right on the money. Mora has no one to blame but himself. Mora still hasn’t owned up to the KU debacle.

          • Jethro G Sabbath

Give Jim a break. The sun was in his eyes.

      • drakejr

Afraid of long term competition. Kind of like how you run away from the kids table when somebody else takes your crayons you pathetic troll.

        • Just Owns

A Star War’s wannabe – Must be a KU klown begging for work, but in the wrong part of town. Hollywood and Vine needs another Star War cross-dresser.

KU is the King and Queen of cream puff competition. KU, the Sand Volleyball Chumps. Fireball on Jar-Jar.

          • WEB_Dupree

Do the UCLA fans on this blog already know that KU is your code-name for USC? Over at Wolf’s blog, we all understand your gibberish like Han Solo understands Chewbacca, but maybe your fellow Bruin fans don’t dig your lingo.

  • MPPBruin

Classy move right before the bowl game.

  • j metaphor

College football is turning into college basketball. Two and done.

    • 88 Straight

Redmond has been a bit of a wild card/head case at UCLA. Some might just call him a character but it isn’t totally surprising.

      • Just Owns

Disagree. This has Mora written all over it. Mora continues to hurt his recruiting possibilities.

88, if you were a 4 or 5 star recruit, Harbaugh or Mora?

        • 88 Straight

Harbaugh is one of the top 5 coaches in the country. It’s a simple answer and has nothing to do with Redmond.

          • Just Owns

Well it does, why is Redmond bailing the FB program before a bowl game.

Just because Redmond may be a head case, it doesn’t follow he bails on the FB program.

I mean Mora seems to be losing players left and right, so whatever Mora’s doing isn’t inspiring his players.

Where there’s smoke, there might be fire.

Like to see Mora move on.

          • 88 Straight

Who will you replace him with?

          • Jethro G Sabbath

            Lane Kiffin

          • Laker Rod

Hey is it possible for us the answer ourselves? Might as well, we have all the answers.

          • Jethro G Sabbath

There’s a guy on Wolf’s blog with over 11K posts just on the latest version of one of his accounts. I don’t think I’m out of line here.
Furthermore, if Mora had redshirted Rosen, we might not be having this discussion.

          • Just Owns

Not sure. K. Lacy has been dubbed Redmond’s replacement by other fan opinions. But that’s tentative because I’ve read that Lacy has a lingering ankle problem.

          • Jethro G Sabbath

That’s not what he asked, genius.

          • EncinitasBruin

Lane Kiffin HC, Monty Kiffin DC, and Steve Sarkisian OC. Heck, maybe Todd Marinovich could coach the QBs, and play his guitar for the players during half time.

          • 88 Straight

I meant who would you replace Mora with. You advocated for Mora to leave, so I just wondered what your alternative would be.

While it seems like we have lost quite a few players this year, I don’t know how that compares to other schools. Does it mean we have issues between the players and the staff? Are these recruiting errors in misjudging a player’s character? I don’t know the answers. Texas A&M just lost their top 2 QBs, both 5 star kids. Strange world.

          • EncinitasBruin

Yep. Just go on ESPN’s college page and look at the news on the home page. Every other story is either about a coach or player leaving a program. Mora’s players currently have the second best graduation rate in the Pac 12, behind Stanford. That says a great deal, as the rate jumped 20 points in ’13–as the program transitioned from the CRN era to the Mora era.

          • EncinitasBruin

How is Redmond’s impetuosity on Mora? Currently UCLA has the second best graduation rate of football players in the P12, behind Stanford.

  • LTEfan

Stupid move, at risk of going undrafted and yet he walks out on his team and skips his last game? It was just so urgent to sign with an agent? He just flunked his first predraft test and added a character red flag. Good luck to you, Mr. Face Paint.

  • BruinBob

There is strong speculation that Alex Redmond flunked his finals and was not going to be eligible for the bowl game.

  • Laker Rod

Oh brother. What a freakin’ joke. Playing true frosh in their career then see them leave early and don’t even finish the season ala Myles Jack, Chris Clark, Fred Ulu-Perry, and now Redmond.

Mora better re-assess who he is recruiting and make sure he’s getting guys who want to be Bruins for 4 to 5 years.

This is on Jim Mora and the assistant coaches.

  • BruinBob

Beg to differ. This is on Alex Redmond. UCLA provides a wealth of academic resources to assist all student athletes. If Redmond couldn’t pass finals and carry the minimum GPA, then that’s his problem. Mora can’t take exams for players. No excuses!!!

    • EncinitasBruin

Agreed. It’s not one man’s responsibility to assure that 85 kids and very young men pass their finals.

  • Sam Bam

What are Vanderdoes and Clarke’s plans? Vanderdoes coming off a season ending knee injury, Clarke with a 2nd Round Draft evaluation. The Bruins DLine would be tough up the middle.

  • KevinN

Whats wrong with you guys? He’s a kid wanting to make money and if declaring, best to skip game and not risk injuries. Let the kid go make his money as playing football is his job to do it.
Dont hate and if you guys need, go to the SC site.

    • LTEfan

Not going to make money unless he gets his act together

    • EncinitasBruin

I think the biggest reaction is about the timing. Who does that? If this were the new norm, then why not declare the second you are eligible to turn pro–at the beginning of the season. Su’a Cravens turned pro, but he’s not abandoning his teammates for their bowl game against Wisconsin. If Jack hadn’t blown out his knee, he’d be playing in the bowl game, even though he’s already declared.

  • Leadout1

    Flunked out. Bummer

  • EncinitasBruin

Quarter system. Finals last week. You guys do the math.

  • Laker Rod

Good luck to Redmond. Hope he has a great nfl career.

  • Laker Rod

You are absolutely right. This is on Alex Redmond and has nothing to do with coach mora. Coach cannot control the decisions of others.
