USC 89, UCLA 75: Bruins searching for answers after loss to Trojans

A slight favorite entering Pauley Pavilion tonight, UCLA fell apart at home in an ugly 89-75 loss to USC — the team’s first in the rivalry in six tries. After the game, head coach Steve Alford, senior Tony Parker, and sophomore Thomas Welsh each cited defensive struggles as the root cause.

“I just don’t know if we’re bringing that energy defensively,” Welsh said. “It’s hurting us.”

UCLA’s first offensive play goes to T. Parker. Parker is max 2 feet from the basket, and his shot is short. That Bruins fans was the jist of UCLA offensive game.

But the UCLA defense was a mean offense to UCLA BB. That’s not to say Bozo U didn’t deserve to win, but the majority of Toejam shots (made/not made) were uncontested by Bruins. In fact, it appeared to me that the UCLA team thought they were way to good to play, old fashion, team type basketball.

I wasn’t a Howland fan in the end. However, Howland is right that defense very important – just not to the UCLA Bruins.

Just admit SC is better.I have criticized Pat Haden as much as anyone but he is probven right in his faith in Enfield. NCAA here we come!

      • Just Owns

I’ll admit the toejams were better last night and deserved to win.

That sounds more sincere than Bozo U BB fans that for the last 62 years have repeatedly stated that Bozo U is strictly a FB factory; and, now have SHAMELESSLY hopped aboard the Andyain’twinning Toejam BB BANDWAGON.

Should have put Neuheisel in there.

    • Just Owns

Neuheisel to wide open Parker; Parker drops the ball.

    Signature win for the Trojans!

    • Just Owns

Over an unranked Bruin Basketball team? 22 you’ve less standards than a cheap date.

like when the bRUINS were beating the depleted Trojans in Football the past few years ???

        • Just Owns

I make no excuses for UCLA’s Bozo U Basketball loss. It’s happened, and will be etched in its own room at Hubris Barn: SUCC somehow wins a basketball game vs UCLA.

You on the other hand, whine old, loser excuses, excuses, excuses like a looped F*rt sound byte. Whine and make loser excuses, excuses, excuses is all Bozo U fans do well.

          F*rt on.

Is that how you were conceived?

Rah Rah jumps in fruitlessly 18 hours later.

Can’t blame Parker too much this time – he wasn’t perfect, but at least he and Welsh kept them in the game. Alford was horrible…and his son stunk, too. Alford and Hamilton went a combined 8 for 26 from the field, and the bench was 0 for 8.

    • 88 Straight

Beyond the 8 for 26, they might want to guard somebody. At least Hamilton grabbed 10 boards.

UCLA always has problems against teams that shoot well from the 3 point line. USC was 45% on 3 pointers. Wassu was draining 3s also. That shouldn’t happen.

  • Gordo Albondigas

So, its not just in football that ucla doesn’t play defense?

    • UCLA Dynasty

      I love albondigas soup!

      • Gordo Albondigas

        And it loves you.

Why did we fire Lavine? At least he got us to the sweet 16. I’m not sure Alfred can get us to the 2nd round of the NIT with all these cupcake losses. Totally embarrassed against the worst team in the PAC.

“I just don’t know if we’re bringing that energy defensively,” Welsh said. “It’s hurting us.”

Defense is all about heart and effort.

UCLA’s male basketball and football players have in the last decades brought SHAME to ALL of the UCLA family through their lack of heart and effort.

A temporary solution to this attitude problem is to have UCLA’s male BB and FB players drink a few shots of espresso before games or simply take more Adderall as NFL players may do.

The better long-term solution is to find players with more heart AND have a system which demands heart and effort – like the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs have done.

    • Just Owns

      Sounds reasonable.

Shots of espresso?…..I’d better call my investment advisor and suggest we buy more stock in Starbucks!!!!
