Three hours before NSD began and the Bruins already started things off with a big statement landing Serra recruit Brandon Burton. Comma, Mique, you’re a SoCal boy, don’t get wooed by those Alabama boys!

    • 88 Straight

We need to close strong with Juarez, Tagaloa, Asiasi and Perez. Plus Tupai later this week.

      • MPPBruin

3 out of 4 ain’t bad. Losing Asiasi stinks, but given that we don’t know how Coach Polamalu will be calling games, I’m not sure how much losing on a top TE will affect the team. It will be interesting to see what our offense looks like next year.

        • 88 Straight

It would have been nice to get Asiasi but you can’t win them all. UCLA got some help in both lines and grabbed 2 JC Def Linemen with upsides and things look good with Maxs Tupai this weekend which will be another body on the DL. It was a good close for UCLA.

          • MPPBruin

Two Juco DTs are a really nice pick up. After seeing our defensive line get manhandled this year it will be nice to shore this up. It would be great if they’re productive enough to not need Tagaloa to play.

          • 88 Straight

Ant the one JUCO DT/DE has 3 years eligibility left. Angus may have found another diamond in the rough, like Takk.

  • commentar

    Hat looks good on ya!

  • EncinitasBruin

Of the top 8 guys on the Big Board for UCLA going into NSD, we landed 6, only losing out on Hansford and Asiasi. A great day for Bruin Nation. Landing Tagaloa and Juarez is HUGE. Top 8 class (compared to the crosstown school, who will finish around 15). Flipping OL Perez is excellent as well (and will make Laker Rod a little less grumpy today).

    • Sam Bam

Good day for both USC and UCLA. We knew for two days that Asiasi and Kongbo weren’t going to be Trojans and our class looked like it was going to miss hugely today, but we got a lot of surprises and finished strong. UCLA got Mique (no surprise) and Boss (no surprise) and seem happy. Congrats.

      • EncinitasBruin

SC surprised some folks with a strong finish. Now it’s truly head to head, with sanctions in the rear-view mirror. Gotta love college football!

        • Sam Bam

These rankings don’t mean squat if these players aren’t coached up and perform. But as for the recruiting part of college football SC/UCLA have to be happy with today’s results.

          • EncinitasBruin

Amen to that! The Shaw Effect…

      • MPPBruin

It’s great to see the two teams recruiting at high levels. Rivalries are only fun if both teams are good.

        • Sam Bam

You said it. It’s better when both teams are actually competitive. And I’m sick of Stanford and Oregon.

          • MPPBruin

I feel like UCLA and USC are neck and neck right now, but I’m sick of getting worked by Stanford. We need to turn the page.

    • Laker Rod

Pretty happy with this class. I would say we are still missing one freshman offensive lineman and we could have gotten one more freshman defensive tackle.

      • 88 Straight

It looks like UCLA will get one more DT with Maxs Tupai visiting this weekend and expected to sign. Overall, I think the staff closed really well given Klemm’s suspension setting back OL recruiting.

        • Laker Rod

Tupai seems more like a defensive end? 6’2 255. What I read about him says he played DE in high school and he had over 100 tackles. I would still take him if we can.

          • 88 Straight

That’s correct. He is a DE and a 4-star on Scout. He may have been a one-time SC commit. Tuiasosopo stayed on him and it looks like it will pay dividends. We need bodies and some of these kids may bulk up more in a couple of years and be able to play inside.

  • jameskatt

I’m looking forward to next year’s UCLA football season with a more pro-style offense and defense with the new infusion of talent we have.

We have 10 new linemen. Could use more.

We have Mique Juarez who looks like a better version of Myles Jack, though I would rather see him become a better version of Anthony Barr – even to the point of graduating with a degree.

    Looks like an exciting year.

Great job for the coaching staff including the new additions.

  • 88 Straight

Reading a lot of good things about Rick Wade. May have bulked up quite a bit and see more action than your chart suggests. We will see. Red shirting requires depth and with only 85 slots, if you redshirt 20, you are left with 65. That can get thin quickly.

    • Laker Rod

Something you might want to keep in mind…you can only bring like 67 players to travel for conference games.

And if you think Rick Wade passes up Dickerson, McKinley, and Tuioti-Mariner…then I repeat…it’s no wonder UCLA never gets anywhere. SMH

      • 88 Straight

I have no idea if he passes any of them up or not. I doubt that you have seen him or have any knowledge of the situation either. Have you been attending practice this past year?

Just passing on what I have read and you go straight for the cheap shot. A little insecure?

        • Laker Rod

The whole point is that if UCLA ends up starting a redshirt freshman on the D line then how much success can we really expect. Do we really need to go over all of this yet again?

I repeat…provide me some examples of redshirt freshmen defensive ends or true frosh defensive ends that have started and he was part of a top ranked conference defense for a conference champ..

This is no different than me requesting of you to provide some examples of true frosh quarterbacks who won a conference championship. Your response was…you never know..it may happen. Well…it didn’t.

And you don’t have any response pertaining to the 67 man travel squad? Do you know Ohio State only played 4 true frosh. They redshirted everybody else. Their class was big too. Over 25 signees in 2015.

          • 88 Straight

Try reading again and get to the part that I suggested he would start. It isn’t there. You take a simple comment about reports that a guy has looked good and interpret in classic Rod fashion. Wade is an interesting prospect. I do think he has a shot at making the two deep based upon reports I have read. Now I am sure you will misinterpret that too.

          • Laker Rod

Wrong. The whole point is that you again try to claim a freshman is this good or that good. That’s what it is constantly about. The fact you can’t name any redshirt freshman starters who played for a successful defense that won a conference championship shows how you back off and now just say Wade might make the two deep. Show me where on the two deep.

This is what I have 4 man D line front:

RDE/OLB – McKinley Sr, Hollins Sr, Lucier-South RFr (keep in mind that the player who lines up here is often more of a speed rusher. Wade would not line up here. McKinley is in for rush defense purposes and Hollins comes in for pass situations.

RDT – Ankou RSr, Nick Terry Jr, Toran RSo
LDT – Vanderdoes RJr, Nick Terry Jr, Boss Tagaloa
            Fr or Taua RSo

I’m not even sure if Carl Hulick RSr is returning but I repeat…it’s the coaches failure to develop guys like Hulick which forces UCLA to play true freshmen like Boss Tagaloa. Many fans were high on Hulick when UCLA first recruited him. What happened? These are the guys Stanford develops. Think about it.

LDE – Dickerson Jr, Tuioti-Mariner Jr, Rick Wade RFr

Explain to me why you think Wade will beat out Tuioti-Mariner. Explain to me why Tuioti-Mariner played as a true freshman then. I repeat…both Dickerson and Tuioti-Mariner will be in their 3rd year. Have you not learned your lesson from the past? Don’t get me wrong either. I like Wade’s height and length. Perhaps he can bat down a few passes. For now though he’s 3rd string.

Also…in pass rush situations…the coaches may move Dickerson inside along with EV and put McKinley at one DE spot and Hollins at pass rushing end/LB.

          • 88 Straight

Another reading comprehension fail. Where is the sentence that I used the name Tuioti-Mariner? Your lack of reading comprehension must get very embarrassing for you. It’s a good thing they have pictures to go with at Mickie D’s.

And as predicted, another list! LOL

          • Laker Rod

Where have you been hearing good things? It’s the same old story. The same fanbase always roots for these younger guys and try to report good things. All the interviews go to the young guys.

YOU have zero knowledge on Rick Wade yourself. I have knowledge to know that true freshmen and redshirt freshmen D linemen normally don’t do well. Deal with it and wake up.

          • 88 Straight

Wow, what a great post! I already said I don’t have any idea if Rick Wade is as good as people are saying. I admitted it quite a ways back in this stupid thread, but you can’t really read. You know who else has no knowledge about Rick Wade? YOU. You have no idea about Rick Wade. You have not been to a single practice to watch Rick Wade. You just have no idea what you don’t know.

You don’t talk about Rick Wade. You simply talk about freshmen in general because that is all you have. You are simply unaware of how good he is or isn’t. All you have is your line about “freshmen D linemen normally don’t do well.” Wow…what a news bulletin! Everyone is already aware of what normal is. You act like what you present here is some new information. What you are saying is simply an evaluation based upon others and what is historical. I would suggest you work on your reading comprehension and you wouldn’t make a mountain out of a molehill. It was a simple comment that went WAY over your head as you tried to read so much into it, you spun yourself into a knot.

And, you have ZERO knowledge or Rick Wade. You just can’t admit it.

          • Laker Rod

LOL!! You don’t get it. Look…it does not matter if I have knowledge on Rick Wade or not. The knowledge and evidence I have applies to freshmen defensive linemen. Most don’t do well. I asked you to provide examples of conference championship team who had good defenses that played freshmen defensive linemen. You can’t come up with any.

I asked you close to a year ago to provide true freshman QB examples where their team won conference championships. You couldn’t come up with anybody back then either. You then make this claim that with true frosh Rosen UCLA could possibly go 10-2. LOL!!! YOU WERE WRONG.

I specifically told you way back well before the season even started that if it came down to USC vs UCLA for the South title and true frosh Josh Rosen was the QB…UCLA would not win. I TOLD YOU. I was right.

I also told you that UCLA will lose the first of their 2 of 3 conference games. You tried to argue against this also. I was right again. I told you for sure UCLA was NOT winning any conference championship with a true frosh QB. I was right again.

You have been wrong every single time…because you side with no logic whatsoever. You’re just hoping for some miracle.

          • 88 Straight

You don’t get the simple fact that if you don’t know anything about Rick Wade you have no right to comment on how he might do. It’s simple. You don’t know the difference between fact and opinion.
