Not sure what’s going on with Mique, but this is starting to look like a troubling trend for this staff.

    • Sam Bam

It is a trend. Girlfriend and parents are probably the issue from what I’ve heard, but still hard to tell with Mique.

      • NYC Bruin

That’s a fair point, but outside of Broadus USC would have taken all three of those guys and I’m not sure it would have worked out any differently, at least for Clarke and Juarez. Smith was the weird Ulbrich situation, bottom line is I doubt this is as horrible a situation as you want it to be, nor is it as calm “nothing to see here” situation as I want it to be.

        • Sam Bam

To be fair we wanted Clarke and he was ours for sure, then we flipped Tyler Petite and his recruitment pretty much ended. UCLA was lucky that Juarez family took over his recruitment because he wanted to be a Trojan even after Sark was fired. His dad pushed him away from SC. Same with Ellis McCarthy. He wanted to be a Trojan badly, but his dad hates USC with a passion and denied him of USC and.his second choice of Oregon. Then we gift wrapped Kylie Fitts. We mucked that up, but it didn’t help us that his coach was bad mouthing SC for his own agenda. My point is you’ve been getting these good players who could have easily been Trojans, but there seems to be a hole in the the way things are going at UCLA. It’s there job to recruit them and sign these kids, but it’s also there job to keep them at UCLA.

          • NYC Bruin

Oh come on dude. you sound like a UCLA fan who says “they wanted to be Bruins, but couldn’t get in academically”. Believe it or not some people choose to go to UCLA over USC. Everything you just said is chatroom garbage, not even Gerard Martinez would substantiate that Juarez bit.

          • Sam Bam

            Truth hurts pal. Sorry.

          • NYC Bruin

Yeah, every UCLA player USC wanted didn’t go to USC for some crazy outside reason, like their parents hate USC. Okay….

          • Sam Bam

You can debate it all you want. Fitts and McCarthy’s situations were clear as day. Everyone knows what went down with their recruitment and dads. And funny thing is Fitts says he made a mistake not going to SC. McCarthy begged and pleaded to his dad, his dad walked into Oregon and flat out told Don Pellum that his son wasn’t going to Oregon or USC.

          • NYC Bruin

Funny how all of these crazy conspiracies happened after Jim Mora took over and wasn’t a common thing during the CRN / CKD years.

          • Laker Rod

Both Fitts and McCarthy didn’t even contribute much at UCLA.

The biggest problem I see with certain 4 or 5 star types that UCLA is getting is that they seemed to have come to UCLA thinking they would have everything handed to them on a silver platter.

When they realize they have to work for things and Jim Mora is being really tough on them then certain guys seem disappointed.

From what I saw in how Chris Clark was handled it was totally the own coaching staff’s fault.

First of all, the UCLA recruiting team did this fancy press release for Chris Clark showing fantasy stats in how he could be the next Rob Gronkowski and even Mora said we didn’t bring Chris Clark in to redshirt.

Then when Clark arrives at UCLA he unfortunately had mono. I saw nothing wrong with him showing up to the 1st or 2nd practice not dressed as he was still recovering but Jim Mora totally chewed him out and said he would ship his butt back to New York if he doesn’t take things more seriously.

The bottom line though is that Chris Clark wasn’t producing on the practice field and he was NOT ready as a true frosh plain and simple.

But still…I don’t think Jim Mora is a bad coach. Far from it. He’s a good coach who is still learning how to handle college kids and recruit high school kids.

I think Jim has a much better handle of things now and he’s learned that a lot of these guys straight out of high school are simply not ready or in other words…they are not as good as the existing players he has which is a credit to him and his coaching staff for developing the guys they have.

And it would be interesting to know what type of “excused” absence Mique Juarez has. Usually it is due to some illness or death in the family or a close friend which is understandable.

The good thing also is that the Bruins recruited 3 other linebackers.

          • Sam Bam

I think it’s almost official that Mique is gone. But with Mora I just think there’s been too many misses on how he handled of these big recruits. Clarke being one. Roquan Smith was a disaster. But also he layed out the red carpet for Cordell Broadus and even admitted that his recruitment was based more on the fact that he was Snoops son. Same with PDiddy’s son. Might be a good publicity move for the program, but first of all you don’t say those things because it’s not good buisness and doesn’t look genuine. A big part of being the head coach is keeping these kids even when they are homesick or unhappy about playing time. That’s where he hasnt came through. I’m not saying to kiss anyone’s butt, but these are 4*/5* kids we’re talking about and beside Kesain Lucier-South, Soso Jomabo and Rosen, all these big time kids have left just as fast as they’ve arrived. Throw in all the recent decommits and you have to wonder what’s behind all this.

          • Laker Rod

Was Clark really a big recruit? Clark hasn’t seemed to have really landed anywhere…has he?

And all these misses where young guys come and leave early isn’t the reason why UCLA/Jim Mora has not been able to win the Pac-12 South in awhile. The reason why UCLA can’t win it is because Jim Mora has been playing too many true freshmen and too many guys are leaving after their true junior year.

Imagine this UCLA team if it retained Brett Hundley for his last year or Xavier Sua Filo or Ellis McCarthy or Caleb Benenoch or Myles Jack or Alex Redmond or Thomas Duarte.

          • Sam Bam

He’s at Penn St or Pitt. But to add to your comment, Mora has to sell these kids on staying or leaving especially when. He was an NFL coach and knows the buisness. My thing is whether he likes it or not, when these kids are on the fence about staying or leaving that’s when he has to become more than a coach and be that father figure and sell the kid on staying, tell him that things are gonna get better. It’s almost like he has the “it’s my way or the highway” approach. That’s not the right move when you are trying to build a program with high profiled kids. Nick Saban’s or Urban Meyer can get away with that and have another 4*-5* kid right behind that kid who chose to leave. But Mora (and his staff ) have to do a better job of digging deep and holding onto kids. In my opinion.

  • Laker Rod

Have no idea what’s going on with Mique Juarez and wish him the best but considering the time he missed during spring practice and how much time he has missed now in summer/fall practice…he’s headed for a redshirt and doesn’t even deserve to play at this point.

The guy isn’t even ready. He’s getting burned by a 295 lb fullback. High school is way different than college. I still think Mique Juarez can be a fantastic player and it’s too bad he suffered a concussion in the spring and it’s too bad he’s missing time now…if he didn’t miss all this time then I don’t necessarily mind seeing him play this year.

Some guys just need time to get acclimated with school and everything else. We have 3 senior linebackers in Jayon Brown, Isaako, and Cameron Judge. Juarez should see plenty of playing time as a redshirt frosh anyhow in 2017.

    • Sam Bam

Just saying “redshirt” seems like a way for Mique to move on and transfer. I don’t think that’s an option for him. Just my personal take.

      • Laker Rod

Well…if he transfers he has to sit out anyhow so he is in effect redshirting whether he stays or goes.

        • Sam Bam

          True. I think he’s gone.

          • NYC Bruin

And you’d be wrong for thinking that 🙂
