Notes and observations from the day:

  • Shells and shorts for Tuesday’s practice.
  • Tuesday’s practice will probably be the hottest practice UCLA will have while in San Bernardino as the temperature is supposed to drop through out the rest of the week. The 3 p.m. practice started with temperatures near 104 degrees and included a team water break at about 4:30 p.m.
  • Receiver Theo Howard made a return to the field after straining his hamstring in practice last week. He seemed like a full participant in practice before tweaking his ankle late in the session. He went to the trainers tent and put ice on it. Before getting hurt, he made some good catches and didn’t looked slowed at all by his hamstring.
  • Paco Perez (knee) was on the sideline working out as was Marcus Moore (back). Perez was doing some exercises to test lateral movement, which is probably a good sign.
  • It looked like the receivers had a good day during one-on-ones. Very few drops and some crisp route running. Josh Rosen hit Eldridge Massington for a good completion against Fabian Moreau in which Massington used a slick move to create separation.
  • Mike Fafaul bounced back from his two-interception practice last night and made some really nice throws. He had a long touchdown to Darren Andrews in the one-on-one period and hit Caleb Wilson for a long touchdown during the team period.
  • Freshman punter Austin Kent had some booming punts during the special teams period. So that looks like an encouraging sign.
  • Jaleel Wadood nearly came up with an interception during 7-on-7 when he jumped a route against Nate Iese, but ended up dropping the ball. He did pushups as a punishment.
  • Ishmael Adams had a highlight catch during 7-on-7 as he elevated for a high pass from Rosen, tipped it to himself and caught it.
  • We also got a rare look at Dymond Lee in 7-on-7. He completed only one of his four throws. His one completion went to Mossi Johnson. He overthrew two receivers and threw the other one too low.
  • After giving up a long completion from Rosen to Iese, the first-team defense locked the offense out of the end zone on third and fourth down in the red zone during the last team period. Randall Goforth came up with the pass breakup on fourth down against Adams.
  • Josh Woods had a good showing in the final team period playing with the No. 2 defense. He had a “sack” on Fafaul and then recorded a tackle for loss on the very next play, which was third-and-short. Fafaul threw an incompletion on fourth down to cap another defensive stop.
  • Fafaul threw a 10(ish)-yard touchdown to Alex Van Dyke in the second offense’s last play of the team period.
  • DeChuan Holiday picked off Matt Lynch on the goal line in the last play of practice on fourth-and-goal from the 10. Lynch did throw two touchdowns on the day, both during team periods.
  • Good days for both J.J. Molson and Andrew Strauch. Molson hit 5-of-6 field goals, including a 50-yarder. His one miss came from 54 yards. It definitely had the distance, but it was a little wide. Strauch also connected from 50 yards.
