Game day graph: First half recap

UCLA will start the second half of its season Saturday against Washington State at 7:30 p.m. in Pullman. It’s been an underwhelming and inconsistent first six games of the year for the Bruins. For a quick recap:

10-15-firsthalf

UCLA has only been outgained in one game this year (Stanford), and even then, it was only by 25 yards. This is all without a running game for the past month, so a fair amount of praise should go to the defense for keeping things under control when the offense is struggling. Not noted on the graph, but a positive from the offense is that they’re actually winning the time of possession battle (30:55 minutes of possession a game), which pays dividends for the defense.

Interestingly, UCLA has not won a game in which they’ve given up more sacks than they’ve tallied themselves. The pass rush has been much more effective in recent weeks, but only got one sack last week against Arizona State. The Bruins were dealing with some injuries last week on the defensive line as Eli Ankou (elbow) missed his second straight game and Takkarist McKinley, Deon Hollins and Keisean Lucier-South all got a little dinged up during the game.
