Rip Scherer‘s greatest coaching victory as a head coach came in 1996 when he led Memphis to its first ever win over in-state rival Tennessee. Fans stormed the field after the 21-17 upset and toppled the goal posts to the field at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

The UCLA tight ends coach will return to that same field Saturday as the No. 25 Bruins face Memphis at 9 a.m. His six-year tenure with the Tigers ended after he was fired in 2000 with a 22-44 overall record.

“A lot of water has gone over the dam,” he said. “So in a lot of ways, it’s just another game.”
