UCLA has only played Memphis once in its history, but the Bruins should know plenty about what the Tigers can do.

Second-year Memphis head coach Mike Norvell spent four years at Arizona State as the offensive coordinator under Todd Graham. The Sun Devils went 2-2 against the Bruins during Norvell’s tenure in the desert, but each year, his offense outgained UCLA’s. Here’s a look at the history between UCLA and Norvell:

When Memphis and UCLA meet Saturday at 9 a.m. PT in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, expect a high-scoring affair. Each game between the Bruins and the Sun Devils from 2012-15 averaged 77.25 combined points.

Arizona State averaged 518.5 yards and 36.5 points per game against UCLA during Norvell’s tenure. Both marks exceeded ASU’s average across all games during those four years as the Sun Devils gained 459.8 yards per game and scored 37.5 points per game with Norvell.

Despite getting outgained every game, UCLA used big, timely plays to keep the series even. Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked the game-winning field goal in the final seconds in 2012. In the 2014 rout, Ishmael Adams scored touchdowns on a 95-yard pick six and a 100-yard kick off return while the defense forced four turnovers.

After leaving the desert, Norvell wasted little time translating his productive offense to the Tigers. As a rookie head coach last year, he guided the second-highest scoring offense in Memphis history (38.8 points per game) and second-best total offense (486.9 yards per game). The passing game has been always a threat under Norvell, but the combination of quarterback Riley Ferguson and receiver Anthony Miller could be especially lethal to the Bruins this week as UCLA may be without its two starting safeties Saturday. Jaleel Wadood (head) and Adarius Pickett (knee) are both questionable with injuries they suffered last week.
