Weekly Q&A: Oregon

UCLA will try to snap its six-game losing streak to Oregon on Saturday at the Rose Bowl at 1 p.m. It’s homecoming for the Bruins and the team is also honoring Heisman winner Gary Beban on the 50th anniversary of his victory.

If you have UCLA football questions, drop them in the comments or shoot me an email — thnguyen(at)scng(dot)com — and I’ll post answers on THURSDAY.

It appears that Mora has checked out…thoughts on the probability of his return next year?

  • UCLA Dynasty

Oregon can’t throw. UCLA can’t stop the run. Will Royce Freeman have 200 yards or 250 yards?

    • jameskatt

Do you mean 300 or 400 yards?

      • gotroy22

Can Freeman break the record of 427 yards rushing by Samaje Perine of Oklahoma on Nov 22, 2014?

  • WhatsBruin

What will it take for UCLA to get Chip Kelly and what other high quality winning coaches are available? Les Miles comes to mind…

    • jameskatt

It will happen when it becomes affordable to let Coach Mora go. Currently the cost of paying Chip Kelly and firing Jim Mora is about $30 MILLION. Would you want to chip in to pay for that? Say, a $10,000 donation to UCLA? If enough fans are willing to donate $10K each, then we can get Chip Kelly. If not, then Jim Mora will stay.

I don’t think this is accurate.

CJM’s has a “structured payment” Buy Out.
Yes, we owe him the $ – minus anything he earns coaching elsewhere or MAY ?? also include any $ made in connection w/ FB e.g. broadcasting, consulting, etc.
So, we only pay him his base salary or base salary + all the fringe payments due under the contract each year until the whole amt due is paid out.
And, this can all be reduced by a one lump sum payment immediately due if he gives us a big discount.

I believe this is how Alford’s Buy Out is structured as well.

The amortization of payments makes it A LOT easier for us to manage – spreads out the cost over many years.

Am I the only one seeing another 4-8 or 3-9 season coming? Smh

It appears the passive bend but don’t break defensive schemes aren’t working. Are the players voicing any discontent for the passive schemes? I have heard recruits praise some more aggressive schemes (Utah) does having such a passive scheme hurt in recruiting?

    • gotroy22

605 yards to Desert Scrub is a lot of breaking.

  • Stuck

The direction of the team appears downward. Any chance Mora would resign at the end of the year if it’s clear his voice is no longer resonating? It’s painful to watch well coached teams execute and then watch UCLA play as if they never have the opportunity to practice. Maybe we can have Gary Anderson talk to CJM about the joy of giving up a multi million dollar buyout?

  • Buster Bruin

I would like to hear some positive news. Are there any players on defense who have exceeded expectations or been pleasant surprises? Perhaps Chigozie Nnoruke?

  • Buster Bruin

How would you assess the morale of the team? Kenny Young seemed to indicate at the Arizona postgame press conference that some of his teammates are not fully committed?

  • Daniel flores

Would you please give us your report card on coaching/season so far

  • Buster Bruin

Is there any indication that Coach Mora may have lost confidence in defensive coordinator Tom Bradley?

  • LuchaVa

How much pull does Under Armour have within the Athletic Department? I cant imagine they sit by and allow their investment to get devalued by Mora & Co.

  • gotroy22

Has Chancellor Block considered dropping football like UCSB did 25+ years ago?

  • 92104bruinfan

Last year’s defense was much more successful (obviously) than this year’s version. Is this purely attributable to the loss of starters to the NFL & graduation? If so, how does that square with DC Bradley’s suggestion (if I recall correctly) that he would be able to implement additional packages into this year’s defense as a result of players’ experience with Bradley’s system and concepts?

  • Coach Thom

Coach Jim wants desperately for this team to succeed but he now knows that his choices of certain coaches have been less than stellar. I believe he also realizes that many of his highly rated recruits do not have the talent and commitment he assumed they did. He’s also working under a university administration that simply doesn’t care much about football. Add to that the location of this university…surf, sun, mega-million dollar estates, Hollywood, parties, glamour, facades….does all that really contribute to the hard-ass, blue color work ethic that top tier football demands? I hope Coach Jim can turn things around but he’s got enormous challenges facing him. Just my opinion.

Where would you rank UCLA in the conference, 1 to 12, in roster talent? How about in quality of coaching staff?
