Jaylen Hands wasn’t close to 100 percent. He would never almost miss a dunk like he did in the first half against Detroit Mercy if he was at full strength.
But even with his explosiveness compromised by a left foot sprain, Hands had a career-high 23 points with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in UCLA’s 106-73 rout over Detroit Mercy on Sunday at Pauley Pavilion.
He came off the bench for the second straight game and gave the Bruins (7-1) an immediate lift, scoring 13 points in an eight-minute span during the first half. The one thing that frustrated him about the game was a dunk when he said he had to hang on the rim because he didn’t think he got enough height.
“No more of that,” he said. “That made me mad.”
