Aikman to be Enshrined

Troy Aikman, who back in December was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, will be enshrined in South Bend, Ind. on Saturday.

The enshrinement will be televised by CBS College Sports Network beginning at 5:30 PST. ESPN360.com will also carry a live stream of the ceremony.

Rasmussen Pegged as Starter

Some baseball news to pass along…

UCLA left-hander Rob Rasmussen has been named the starting pitcher for the Eastern Division in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game, which will be held at Fenway Park on July 23.

Rasmussen is 2-0 with a 0.96 ERA in three starts for Orleans – the same team he pitched for last summer. The rising junior has struck out 26 in 18 2/3 innings of work.

The southpaw looks to be the early favorite to join standout right-handers Trevor Bauer and Gerrit Cole – who are both pitching for Team USA this summer – in coach John Savage’s weekend rotation next season.

Rasmussen, who was selected in the 27th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school, has had experience pitching in big games – even though he missed most of his freshman campaign after taking a line drive off the foot. He started the Bruins’ deciding game against Cal State Fullerton in the 2008 Fullerton Regional and also took the mound on opening night this past season.

SAC Sights

A pair of pickup basketball games broke out at the Student Activities Center courts today.

Incoming freshman forward Reeves Nelson teamed with Drew Gordon, James Keefe, J’mison Morgan and Michael Roll. Nelson looked particularly strong driving to the paint. Gordon, who suffered a knee injury at the USA U19 team trials in late June, seemed to be just fine – showcasing his leaping ability on a few dunks. Roll was the primary ball handler, while Keefe and Morgan manned the paint.

Former Bruins Ryan Hollins and Earl Watson were on a team together, while incoming freshman Mike Moser played on another.

All-Pro receiver Terrell Owens arrived a bit late but still managed to play a few games.

Afflalo to Nuggets

The Detroit Pistons traded former UCLA guard Arron Afflalo to the Denver Nuggets on Monday. The 23-year-old is entering his third season in the NBA after three seasons as a Bruin. Afflalo averaged just under five points per game coming off the bench last year.

The deal doesn’t come as a surprise since the Pistons recently signed guard Ben Gordon and already have Richard Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey in their backcourt. Here is the Nuggets’ release.
