AJ Carter reverses course, recommits to UCLA

AJ Carter spent 10 days as an LSU commit and now the three-star running back is back to being a Bruin.

Carter, from Many, La., announced on Twitter on Wednesday that he is recommitting to UCLA after he broke off his pledge on June 26 to commit to his hometown Tigers. In his social media post, Carter wrote that he was swayed by the desires of his friends and family, but quickly realized he “made a mistake” as his heart already belonged to the Bruins.

He’s the second running back commit for UCLA in one day as Lentivone Lesane also gave his verbal pledge to the Bruins early Wednesday afternoon. The Bruins have 14 total commits for 2018.

Three-star RB AJ Carter flips UCLA commitment to LSU

UCLA showed interest in three-star running back AJ Carter early in the Louisiana native’s recruiting process and he rewarded the school with an early commitment last April.

Then LSU called.

Carter flipped his commitment from the Bruins to his home-state Tigers on Monday. He officially received an LSU offer only three days ago.

Carter, who was UCLA’s only running back for the 2018 class, wrote on social media that he “appreciate(s) (Jim Mora and DeShaun Foster) for seeing my ability before anyone else. However, I feel like I have to follow another path. I have to follow my dream.”

Foster, UCLA’s first-year running backs coach, began recruiting Carter while he was still at Texas Tech before honoring the offer for UCLA. The Bruins have 12 commits for the 2018 class now:

  • ATH Isaiah Johnson
  • DL Aaron Maldonado
  • OT Blake McDonald
  • S Cam’ron Jones
  • WR Kyle Phillips
  • QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson
  • S Stephan Blaylock
  • DL Niti Liu
  • OL Jason Dickson
  • OL Chris Bleich
  • OL Marco Brewer
  • OL Trey Stratford

Three-star RB AJ Carter commits to UCLA

DeShaun Foster secured his first commitment as UCLA’s running backs coach Saturday as three-star recruit AJ Carter announced his pledge to the Bruins on Twitter.

Carter, a 6-foot, 220-pound back from Louisiana, held an offer to Texas Tech from Foster before the former UCLA running back took the coaching position with the Bruins. Carter also had offers from Arkansas, Arizona State, Missouri and Mississippi State, among others.

The Bruins, who didn’t sign any running backs in the 2017 class, will lose at least one after this year with the graduation of Nate Starks.

Carter is UCLA’s second verbal commit in as many days and seventh overall. UCLA also has commitments from safeties Jhevon Hill and Cam’ron Jones, offensive lineman Blake McDonald, athlete Isaiah Johnson, defensive lineman Aaron Maldonado and wide receiver Kyle Phillips.
