Four Bruins honored by Sporting News

Senior Anthony Barr picked up his second major All-American mention on Friday, becoming a Sporting News‘ selection a day after also making the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s first team. The linebacker is on track to become UCLA’s first consensus All-American since kicker Kai Forbath in 2009.

Barr was a finalist for four major national awards this season. He won the Lott IMPACT Trophy, but missed out on the Bednarik (best defensive player), Butkus (best linebacker) and Lombardi (best lineman/linebacker) awards.

Linebacker Myles Jack, defensive end Eddie Vanderdoes and right guard Alex Redmond all made the Sporting News’ Freshman All-American team.

Anthony Barr named first-team Walter Camp All-American

UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr landed an official All-American honor Thursday night, and it likely won’t be his last this season. The senior was named to the Walter Camp first team, the first Bruin to earn a spot since kicker Kai Forbath since 2009.

The Walter Camp All-American team is one of five recognized by the NCAA, with the others being the Associated Press, AFCA, FWAA and Sporting News teams. Barr was a second-team AP All-American in 2012.

Earning spots on three first teams makes a player a “consensus” All-American, while all five makes him a “unanimous” All-American.

Anthony Barr wins Lott IMPACT Trophy

UCLA linebacker Anthony Barr won the Lott IMPACT Trophy today, his first major national honor this season. The award identifies the best defensive player in college football, but also weighs personal character. The other finalists were USC’s Devon Kennard, Wisconsin’s Chris Borland and Iowa’s James Morris.

Barr is also a finalist for the Lombardi and Bednarik Awards — given to the top lineman on either side of the ball and the top defensive player, respectively. The senior lost the Butkus Award for best linebacker to Alabama’s C.J. Mosley.

Myles Jack doubles up on Pac-12 freshman of the year awards

Talk about versatility. Today, UCLA’s Myles Jack was named both Pac-12 Defensive and Offensive Freshman Player of the Year — becoming the first to take both since the awards were introduced in 2008.

The linebacker/running back earned a starting spot on defense by the Bruins’ second game, and finished the season tied for fourth on the team with 70 tackles. His 10 pass breakups ranked second in the Pac-12, and first nationally among linebackers. Continue reading “Myles Jack doubles up on Pac-12 freshman of the year awards” »
