Florida State knocks UCLA out of NCAA beach volleyball championship

The UCLA beach volleyball team came up one step short of making an all-L.A. national championship match, falling 3-1 to No. 1 Florida State in the final of the consolation bracket on Sunday morning. Florida State will play USC for the national championship. UPDATE: USC won the national title with a 3-0 victory over Florida State.

The Bruins finished 22-8 overall this season.

Beach volleyball one step away from championship match

The UCLA beach volleyball team beat Pepperdine 3-2 and Hawai’i 3-0 on Saturday to advance within one match of the championship match at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships.

The No. 4 Bruins will play No. 1 Florida State on Sunday at 8:30 a.m., with the winner moving on to the championship match against USC at 11 a.m. The title match will be televised on TBS.

The Bruins needed a comeback against Pepperdine to win as UCLA recovered from a 2-1 deficit. Reily Buechler and Julie Consani claimed the clinching point for UCLA, winning 21-19, 15-21, 15-12:

Beach volleyball splits matches on first day of NCAA tournament

In the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships, the No. 4 UCLA beach volleyball team lost its first-round match to No. 5 Hawai’i, 3-0, then rebounded for a 3-2 win over No. 8 Stetson in the consolation bracket.

Jessyka Ngauamo and Zana Muno clinched the win over Stetson on court four with a three-set win.

The Bruins continue play in the second round of the consolation bracket on Saturday. UPDATE: UCLA plays No. 3 Pepperdine at noon on Saturday. You can watch live on truTV.

UCLA’s Megan McNamara named Pac-12 beach volleyball freshman of the year

Megan McNamara was named the Pac-12 beach volleyball freshman of the year on Thursday, the eve of the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships.

McNamara, who often plays with her twin sister Nicole McNamara, had 16 victories at the No. 1 spot for the Bruins this year. The pair of twins won 14 matches together and were named to the All-Pac-12 first team as well as the All-Pac-12 freshman team. UCLA weekend wrap-up: Softball sweeps Arizona State

Here are weekend highlights from the UCLA athletics programs

  • Softball swept Arizona State at home, winning the first two games via walk-off home runs. Mysha Sataraka sealed an 8-6 win on Friday with a three-run homer, then Gabrielle Maurice hit another three-run shot to finish a comeback 6-5 win on Saturday. Madeline Jelenicki led the Bruins on Sunday with two home runs and five RBIs in a 9-4 victory.
