UCLA offensive tackle Simon Goines out with medical condition

UCLA offensive tackle Simon Goines will not participate in training camp due to an undisclosed medical condition, head coach Jim Mora said on Monday.

The redshirt junior has struggled with several leg injuries throughout his career, and missed all of the 2014 season in an attempt to get fully healthy. However, Mora said that the lineman’s condition is not related to his past injuries, and also that it was not life-threatening.

Without Goines, who started 20 games in his first two seasons, UCLA will rely on Caleb Benenoch at starting right tackle. In addition to senior center Jake Brendel and junior left tackle Conor McDermott, the Bruins’ first string currently consists of left guard Kenny Lacy and right guard Alex Redmond.

Also absent from the first day of camp were redshirt sophomore running back Craig Lee (academics), tight end Chris Clark (didn’t dress due to mononucleosis), and receiver Cordell Broadus. Broadus was granted a couple of days off due to a personal issue.

Asiantii Woulard’s decision to transfer out of UCLA thinned out the Bruins’ quarterback rotation, but it also wasn’t a stunner.

“I had a feeling it was coming,” head coach Jim Mora said Thursday. “Some of the indicators that I got from him, and really kind of the way the spring went. There were some family issues. He wanted to get closer to home. He was struggling a little bit. I hope he does well.”

The former four-star recruit asked out of Westwood back in June, opting to go back to his home state and enroll at the University of South Florida. He is currently seeking a waiver to play immediately as a redshirt sophomore.

Mora said that while UCLA could have used Woulard in the still-undecided quarterback race, his departure also makes it easier for coaches to divide practice reps between Josh Rosen, Jerry Neuheisel and Mike Fafaul.

» Mora said there will be no additional punishment for five-star running back Soso Jamabo, who was arrested this summer for fleeing police — but never indicted. The Plano, Texas native enrolled along with the rest of the 2015 signing class, and will be ready when UCLA starts training camp in August.

» Asked about the status of cornerback Justin Combs, Mora said that there have been no changes to UCLA’s roster. The Los Angeles city attorney’s office is still deciding whether or not to press charges against Sean “Diddy” Combs for his alleged kettlebell fight at UCLA last month.

No. 1 running back Soso Jamabo commits to UCLA

No. 1 running back Soso Jamabo committed to UCLA over Texas — putting two Bruin hats on the table during his announcement on ESPNU.

That followed an announcement from top tight end Chris Clark, continuing a huge recruiting morning for head coach Jim Mora and his staff. With the two in fold, the Bruins’ 2015 class includes the No. 1-ranked recruits at not just running back and tight end, but also quarterback (Josh Rosen, already enrolled) and center (Fred Ulu-Perry).

Jamabo also sent his letter of intent to UCLA just minutes after his announcement, making him the first Bruin to officially sign today.

No. 1 tight end Chris Clark has committed to UCLA, giving the Bruins a big start to National Signing Day.

The 6-foot-5, 253-pound Connecticut native picked Los Angeles over Michigan, which had made a hard push for him after hiring former 49ers and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.

“I have an unbelievable relationship with UCLA’s coaches,” Clark said on ESPNU. “Coach Mora has basically become a second dad for me these last few weeks.”

Tight end Alize Jones flips from UCLA to Notre Dame

Tight end Alize Jones has officially decommitted from UCLA and picked Notre Dame, ending a relationship with the Bruins that had cooled for weeks.

The Las Vegas Bishop Gorman product is rated the second-best tight end in the country by both Scout.com and Rivals.com, with the former granting him five stars to the latter’s four. UCLA has spent its recent recruiting efforts focused on No. 1 tight end Chris Clark, who is regarded as a better blocker than Jones.

Clark — a 6-foot-5, 253-pounder from Avon (Conn.) Old Farms School — decommitted from Michigan in early December, but the Wolverines piqued his interest again by hiring head coach Jim Harbaugh.
