An anonymous Pac-12 coach told Athlon Sports he thinks UCLA “is the team to beat in the South.”

Athlon Sports continued its series of conference previews based on anonymous coach comments with the Pac-12 on Wednesday. Judging from the quotes, Pac-12 coaches are pretty high on UCLA. One believes Josh Rosen is “the best (quarterback) in the country right now,” and that he’ll be “a big-time pro.” Another is impressed with UCLA’s defensive talent, especially after injuries hurt the team last year.

ESPN is rolling out its list of top 100 and UCLA offensive tackle Conor McDermott made the cut at No. 70.

After returning for his senior season, McDermott is expected to have a standout year. He’s a leader and one of the two returning starters the Bruins have on the offensive line. He also said at Pac-12 Media Day that he’s grooming Kolton Miller into his “mini me,” which would give the Bruins a great pair of tackles sealing each edge.

McDermott also was named second-team Preseason All-American by Sports Illustrated.

Defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List on Thursday. He is returning from a season-ending ACL tear suffered in the 2015 season opener. Earlier this week, Vanderdoes was made the Bednarik Award Watch List.

Offensive tackle Conor McDermott was also named to the watch list for the Outland Trophy, which honors the nation’s top interior lineman (on offense or defense), as voted on by the Football Writers Association of America. The senior returned for his final year of eligibility with the Bruins after starting 12 games last season.

Defensive back Fabian Moreau was also watch-listed for the Nagurski Award, which is awarded by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club to the best defensive player in the nation. Like Vanderdoes, Moreau is also returning from injury. He broke his foot three games into the season, but was a team co-captain.
