VIDEO: Early enrollees meet with the media after second-to-last spring practice

Lots of videos today: We had the UCLA media debuts for many early enrollees. In total, we have freshmen Mique Juarez, Lokeni Toailoa and JJ Molson, junior college transfers Takkarist McKinley, who transferred in the middle of 2014 last season (whoops), and Nick Terry, and redshirt freshman Cordell Broadus.

Jim Mora also stopped by to talk about Saturday’s Spring Showcase and the Dan Guerrero controversy.

Cordell Broadus, son of Snoop Dogg, to return to UCLA football

Cordell Broadus' commitment on ESPN was big news for UCLA on Signing Day, but the four-star receiver never showed up to camp.

After abruptly giving up the sport last summer, Cordell Broadus will try returning to the UCLA football team as a walk-on.

Cordell Broadus’ on-and-off football career appears to be on again.

The former four-star receiver, perhaps better known as the son of rapper Snoop Dogg, will attempt to return to the UCLA football team less than a year after walking away from the sport. Bruin Report Online first reported that the Bishop Gorman product will report to spring practices later this month as a walk-on.

After signing with the Bruins in February 2015, Broadus failed to report for preseason training camp last August. He remained enrolled at UCLA to pursue a filmmaking career, and wrote in October that he “played football for my father because I thought that was the only way he would love me (and) be a part of my life.” This week, however, he began posting Instagram photos of himself training in school gear.

His change of heart coincides with UCLA losing four of its top five pass-catchers from 2015, including Thomas Duarte — who led the team with 10 touchdown catches — and career receptions leader Jordan Payton. Still, Broadus will have to compete with an incoming recruiting class that includes five receivers, such as the already-enrolled Theo Howard.

The Bruins will start spring practices on March 29.

Cordell Broadus is no longer a member of the UCLA football team.

The son of Snoop Dogg made big news back in February when he committed to the Bruins, an announcement that prompted the famed rapper to declare, “I’m throwing all my USC drawers away.” Bruin Report Online first reported the news of Broadus’ departure.

“Cordell informed me yesterday that he has decided to pursue other passions in his life — in particular his love of film through his company Film School Productions,” head coach Jim Mora said in a statement. “Cordell is an amazing young man with many talents, and we wish him nothing but the best as he continues to pursue his degree at UCLA.”

The 6-foot-3, 186-pound Broadus was ranked as one of the top-30 receivers in the class of 2015 by Rivals.com. Still, he never showed up for UCLA’s preseason camp, which began on Monday at Cal State San Bernardino.

Mora had originally attributed Broadus’ absence to a “personal matter.”

UCLA offensive tackle Simon Goines out with medical condition

UCLA offensive tackle Simon Goines will not participate in training camp due to an undisclosed medical condition, head coach Jim Mora said on Monday.

The redshirt junior has struggled with several leg injuries throughout his career, and missed all of the 2014 season in an attempt to get fully healthy. However, Mora said that the lineman’s condition is not related to his past injuries, and also that it was not life-threatening.

Without Goines, who started 20 games in his first two seasons, UCLA will rely on Caleb Benenoch at starting right tackle. In addition to senior center Jake Brendel and junior left tackle Conor McDermott, the Bruins’ first string currently consists of left guard Kenny Lacy and right guard Alex Redmond.

Also absent from the first day of camp were redshirt sophomore running back Craig Lee (academics), tight end Chris Clark (didn’t dress due to mononucleosis), and receiver Cordell Broadus. Broadus was granted a couple of days off due to a personal issue.

Cordell Broadus has signed with UCLA, giving the Bruins the receiver it needed in the 2015 class — as well as another son of a hip-hop icon on the roster.

The four-star prospect announced his decision to pick the Bruins over Arizona State, LSU and USC on ESPN. His father, rapper Snoop Dogg, also appeared during the announcement wearing UCLA gear, despite his well-known history as a Trojan fan.

“We’re Bruins now,” Snoop Dogg said.

UCLA had lost wideouts Ryan Newsome (to Texas) and L.J. Reed (to JUCO) earlier in the day, although other signees such as athlete Stephen Johnson III and defensive back Octavius Spencer could potentially line up on offense.

Currently on the roster is cornerback Justin Combs, the son of mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
