Former UCLA commit Hunter Echols chooses USC

Two weeks after withdrawing his commitment from UCLA, four-star defensive end Hunter Echols announced his pledge to USC on Friday night.

Echols told Scout.com that once he decommited from UCLA, the Bruins didn’t send him an offer letter and “it just made sense to go our separate ways.”

One of three Cathedral High players to decommit from UCLA since May, Echols said he was “over the (recruiting) process” and settled on USC because he had a great relationship with the staff, including head coach Clay Helton, who recruited him “harder than another other head coach.”

Four-star DE Hunter Echols decommits from UCLA

UCLA lost another early commit Friday as four-star weakside defensive end Hunter Echols withdrew his pledge to the Bruins.

The Cathedral High product is the latest early commit of the class of 2017 to decommit from UCLA as safety Rhedi Short and athlete Rahyme Johnson also turned back on their commitments in May.

Echols recently received an offer from LSU. He was a finalist at The Opening, where he told reporters that he was actively recruiting other players to join him in Westwood.

The Bruins still have four commits in the 2016 class: DE Jaelan Phillips, OG Kanan Ray, DB/WR Jeffrey Manning Jr., and JUCO OT Ronald Rudd III.

UCLA commits Jaelan Phillips and Hunter Echols are among the crop of top recruits at The Opening in Beaverton, Ore., this weekend.

The pair of L.A.-area weakside defensive ends will compete against the best prospects at the premier recruiting event in the country. Phillips is a five-star recruit ranked first in his position in California, according to Scout. Echols, a four-star recruit, is not far behind, taking Scout’s No. 2 ranking for weakside defensive ends in California.

There are a number of uncommitted UCLA targets at the event, including quarterback Jack Sears.

The Opening runs from July 8-10 with ESPNU providing TV coverage on Saturday and Sunday.

Cathedral defensive end Hunter Echols commits to UCLA

A day after UCLA announced its latest recruiting class, the Bruins added one more prospect to its 2017 haul.

Los Angeles Cathedral defensive lineman Hunter Echols announced his commitment to UCLA on Thursday morning, but added that he will still be taking his visits to other colleges. Scout gives the 6-foot-4, 220-pound recruit a four-star ranking, and considers him the second-best defensive end in California.

The Bruins also have verbal commitments from defensive back Rhedi Short and linebackers Jaquan Henderson and Rahyme Johnson.
