Notes and quotes: UCLA 37, Cal 10

UCLA hardly looked unstoppable in its 37-10 win over Cal Saturday, but it did enough to earn its place as a top-10 team.

Some notes from the night:

— The defense held Cal to a season-low 320 offensive yards. The Bears’ 10 points were the lowest of Sonny Dykes’ (relatively short) head coaching career. If not for some untimely penalties, the Bruins might have kept Cal out of the end zone entirely.

The front seven continued its run as one of the conference’s best, sacking true freshman quarterback Jared Goff three times and coming up with clutch stops. Lou Spanos: Cal receivers best UCLA has yet seen

Lou Spanos agreed that Cal receivers Bryce Treggs and Chris Harper are the best UCLA has yet to face this season. “By far,” the Bruins defensive coordinator said. “They’re tremendous kids. They got speed and they got some size too. They give us a great challenge.”

Harper and Treggs rank fourth and eighth in the Pac-12 with 558 and 418 receiving yards, respectively. (The stat is skewed a bit by Cal throwing a conference-high 55 times per game.) Spanos also said that the Bears’ four-receiver packages bore some resemblance to ones Utah used at Rice-Eccles Stadium last Thursday.

UCLA defensive coordinator Lou Spanos said this year’s Utah team uses very similar personnel to the 2012 squad that lost 21-14 at the Rose Bowl. One key difference is the maturity of sophomore Travis Wilson, who went from averaging 3.3 rushing yards per game to 62.75 — third-best among conference quarterbacks. Was it hard to get over the Rose Bowl loss?

First couple of days after that loss were tough. We came back as a team, just kind of regrouped, talked about the season and the accomplishments we’ve made. Put that behind us and looked forward to this game. I think we’re all excited. I’m definitely looking forward to it. I’m glad it’s close to home.

How much are you thinking about the talk around declaring for the NFL Draft?
