Men’s volleyball bounced from NCAA semis in five

Ohio State outlasted UCLA in the NCAA semifinals Thursday night, using a late run and clutch hitting to win in five sets 22-25, 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 18-16.

After winning the fourth set stave off elimination, UCLA, playing in its first national semifinal since 2006 when it won the championship, built an 8-5 lead in the fifth set. But Ohio State came back with a 5-1 run to take the lead 10-9.

The No. 2 Bruins inched ahead late, getting three match points, but each time, Ohio State was up to the task. Twice, the No. 3 Buckeyes answered with kills, while UCLA gave one away on a service error. The Bruins had 26 service errors on the match to just five aces, while Ohio State had 20 service errors to nine aces.

The Buckeyes needed only one match point to win it as national player of the year Nicolas Szerszen hit a vicious ace to send Ohio State to the national final, where they will face No. 1 BYU.

Jake Arnitz led UCLA with 18 kills. J.T. Hatch had 13 kills and 12 digs. Mitch Stahl had 11 kills and four block assists. Oliver Martin had 11 kills, three solo blocks and two block assists.

UCLA weekend wrap up: men’s tennis wins Pac-12 team tournament

Here are some highlights from around UCLA athletics from the weekend:

  • Men’s tennis won the Pac-12 team championship at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament on Saturday with a 4-1 victory over Cal in the final. The Bruins, who also won the regular-season conference title, are on a 15-match winning streak, stretching back to Feb. 14.

UCLA weekend wrap up: Men’s tennis caps off perfect Pac-12 season

Here are some highlights from around UCLA athletics from the weekend:

  • No. 4 Men’s tennis finished an undefeated Pac-12 regular season with a 4-2 win over USC on Sunday. The Bruins (20-2, 7-0) have the No. 1 seed in the Pac-12 tournament his week and have an automatic bye to the semifinals, which start on Friday at Libbey Park in Ojai.

  • Men’s volleyball beat Hawai’i in four sets (25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21) in the MPSF playoff quarterfinals on Saturday. Jake Arnitz led the Bruins with 16 kills. Hagen Smith and Micah Ma’a had 22 and 21 assists, respectively. UCLA faces Long Beach State in the semifinals on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Provo, Utah.

UCLA weekend wrap up: Women’s golf wins PING/ASU Invitational

Here are some highlights from around UCLA athletics from the weekend:

  • Women’s golf, the top-ranked team in the nation, won the PING/ASU Invitational by six strokes. It was the team’s third straight victory in a stroke-play event. Junior Bronte Law, the nation’s top college player according to Golfweek, took the individual title with a 12-under 204, a tournament record.

UCLA men’s volleyball sweeps No. 3 Stanford

The No. 4 UCLA men’s volleyball team got a convincing 27-25, 25-18, 25-22 sweep over No. 3 Stanford on Thursday at Pauley Pavilion. JT Hatch and Jake Arnitz led the Bruins with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Hatch got the match-clinching kill to polish off the sweep:
