Josh Rosen named to Walter Camp Award Watch List

Josh Rosen added his third preseason watch list honor Friday as he was named to the Walter Camp Award Watch List.

Of the 40 players on the list for the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s player of the year, 15 are quarterbacks, including last year’s winner, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson. Alabama leads the country with four, followed by three from Ohio State.

Rosen’s three watch-list nominations are tied with linebacker Kenny Young for the most for a UCLA player this year. In all, Bruins appeared on 10 watch lists.

UCLA’s Josh Rosen is one of four Pac-12 quarterbacks named to the watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award, which honors the nation’s top quarterback.

The SEC had the most nominations for a single conference with six, and the ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 each had four on the 30-man watch list. USC’s Sam Darnold, Washington’s Jake Browning and Washington State’s Luke Falk were also named to this year’s watch list.

Before a shoulder injury derailed his sophomore season, Rosen was the first true freshman to be named a semifinalist for the O’Brien Award since USC’s Matt Barkley in 2009. Troy Aikman won UCLA’s only O’Brien Award in 1988.

Kenny Young already earned two watch list nominations for his on-field play and the senior linebacker added a third Tuesday for his off-field work.

Young was named to the watch list for the Wuerffel Award, which honors the FBS player who best combines community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Young was awarded the 2017 Academic & Student Services Success Award at UCLA, which is given to student-athletes who have developed into self-sufficient learners. He is also a three-time Dean’s List Member (Fall 2016, Winter 2017 and Spring 2017).

Kenny Young on watch list for Butkus Award

UCLA linebacker Kenny Young added a second watch list honor to his preseason resume Monday as the senior was named to the watch list for the Butkus Award, which honors the nation’s top linebacker.

The middle linebacker earned second-team All-Pac-12 recognition last year. His 90 total tackles were second on the team, and he added 8.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, one interception and three fumble recoveries. He ranked sixth in the Pac-12 with 7.5 tackles per game.

Former UCLA linebacker Eric Kendricks is UCLA’s only Butkus Award winner. The current Minnesota Viking claimed the trophy in 2014 after leading the nation in solo tackles per game with 7.8.

Jaleel Wadood included on Jim Thorpe Award Watch List

UCLA safety Jaleel Wadood earned a spot on the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List for the second straight year Friday as the senior was included in the preliminary 45-man group vying for the title as the nation’s top defensive back.

The St. John Bosco alum led the UCLA secondary in tackles last year with 77, which ranked third on the team, and was named honorable mention All-Pac-12 by the conference’s coaches. The Bruins gave up only 12 touchdown passes last season, the fewest in the Pac-12. Wadood is one of two returning starters in the secondary for UCLA, along with cornerback Nate Meadors.
