UCLA plowed its way through the playoffs to the Super Regional on Friday with the long ball. But when the Bruins needed one win to earn their third straight Women’s College World Series berth, they did it the old-fashioned way: with pitching and defense.

No. 5 UCLA beat No. 12 Mississippi on Friday 1-0 thanks to a strong combined pitching effort from Selina Ta’amilo and Rachel Garcia and team defense.

“We’re hitting all cylinders and it’s a big part of what has made UCLA softball the program that we are,” head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez said. “It’s based on the ability for us to have pitching. It all starts in the circle. Defense wins championships.”

Madeline Jelenicki’s two-out RBI single in the first inning was all the scoring UCLA needed as Ta’amilo started in the circle and pitched three innings while giving up three hits. Garcia entered in relief and tossed four hitless innings to earn the win.

The Bruins are the first team to punch their ticket to Oklahoma City this year and will play the winner of the Tallahassee Super Regional between LSU and Florida State in the World Series, which begins June 1.

The UCLA softball team is chasing its 12th national championship in program history in Oklahoma City, but learned about the news of a murder-suicide that left two dead on the UCLA campus while preparing for practice Wednesday morning.

Head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez said the team learned of the incident through social media, and that its “always emotional and can be traumatic” hearing that the campus is on lock down.

“All I could do was pull them together to simply say, it’s a crazy world we live in,” the head coach told reporters at a press conference in Oklahoma City. “It’s a perfect example of understanding what’s in your control and what’s out of your control, and right now we’re in this softball bubble, and it’s out of our control.”

She urged her players to put their phones away for practice, but the coaching staff would monitor the situation. Immediately after training was over, the Bruins learned that the threat had been resolved, although everyone was “a little shaken up” still.

“We get to be fortunate and celebrate this softball bubble that we’re in,” the coach continued. “We’re just here playing softball, but we do have to jump back out into the real world at some point, so I told them we’ve got to take advantage and enjoy why we’re here right now.”

The Bruins face Auburn in the first round of the WCWS at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. The game is televised on ESPN.

UCLA softball head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez often talks about “Bruin Magic.” On Sunday, the Bruins used some of their magic to go from two outs away from elimination to their second straight trip to the Women’s College World Series.

UCLA got two 2-1 victories on Sunday against Oregon in the Super Regional to come back from a Game 1 loss and advance to the WCWS for the second straight year.

Clutch hitting punctuated two stellar pitching performances from Selina Ta’amilo and Paige McDuffee. Just one day after the Ducks put up eight runs on the Bruins, Oregon, the Pac-12 top offense, was limited to just two runs in as many games. Ta’amilo and McDuffee combined to give up just eight hits on the day and at one point kept the Ducks scoreless for 14 straight innings. Oregon scored only in the first inning of Game 2 and the last inning of Game 3.

“Our focus has been scoring as many runs as possible, but this weekend has really been about some outstanding pitching,” Inouye-Perez told reporters.

The WCWS starts Thursday and the Bruins face Auburn in the first round at 11:30 a.m. It’s televised on ESPN.
