UPLAND -- Free cataract surgery for needy patients will be offered during the holidays by a local eye center.

Dr. Robert N. Fabricant, medical director of the Pacific Eye Institute, said the surgery will be performed for those without health insurance or financial resources as part of "Mission Cataract Day" at the center.

The center has provided the service since 1995.

Patients will be initially screened on Dec. 12 beginning at 9 a.m. Proof of income will be required.

Patients must schedule the initial screening at (909) 982-8846.

When a cataract is sufficiently developed to be removed by surgery, the most effective and common treatment is to make an incision into the capsule of the cloudy lens in order to surgically remove the lens.
