An experienced hiker, who had only planned to spend Christmas Eve camping in Mt. Baldy, was escorted safely back to the mainland Friday morning by search and rescue teams.

Larry Amkraut, 56, was expected to be back at his Fallbrook home by noon on Christmas after spending the previous night camping in the mountain. But when he didn't show, friends got worried and called authorities for help, San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokesperson Cindy Beavers said.

Although Amkraut was reported missing, friends told authorities he had plenty of equipment to safely spend the night.

Christmas Eve was reportedly cold, with clear skies and temperatures dipping into the teens.

Recent storms had brought plenty of new snow to the mountain area, said Deputy Ryan Norkunas with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Chino Hills station. Amkraut told officials he had gotten lost and couldn't figure out where he was.
