Mission Cataract underway
All William James Carney, Claremont, wants this Christmas is the gift of sight.
Carney, who has been living with cataracts for a couple years now, has reached the point of hopelessness, often having thoughts of suicide.
"You don't know what you really have until you lose it," Carney said. "And my left eye - I've lost it."
The Pacific Eye Institute has been helping people like Carney get the surgery they need for free since 1992 through "Mission Cataract."
Every year around Christmastime, the surgeons do free cataract surgeries for those who cannot afford them.
Today, dozens of potential patients showed up at the Pacific Eye Institute surgical facility in Upland to be screened for the surgeries, which will take place at the end of December and through January.
