UCS cheer squad off to Dallas, Texas

| |
The Upland Christian High School Varsity cheerleaders have much to look forward to this week.

The squad left today for Dallas, Texas where they'll be performing in the Cotton Bowl on Friday.

"It's very exciting. It's like a dream come true," said Sandee Fancher, cheer coach. "I was a high school cheerleader and I've always thought of doing competitions at a different level than what we had been doing."

The squad was invited to perform in the Cotton Bowl after Fancher explored special out-of-town events for the girls to participate in.

This is the first time the squad has ever left the state to perform, Fancher said.

"I wanted to make this year a really special year for the girls," Fancher said. "This is my first year teaching the squad and we have five seniors, so I wanted to make it a nice time for them."

Tomorrow the team will be cooking breakfast for sick children and their families at the Ronald McDonald house in Dallas, which may be the highlight of the trip for some of the girls.

"It's a charity thing we've wanted to do for a long time and now we finally get to do it," said Sarah Scritsmier, 17, Cheer Captain. "It's exciting to help those little children."

Jenn Brown, 16, said she is also looking forward to visiting with the children at the Ronald McDonald house.

"We get to sit down and talk with the kids and get to know them better," Brown said.
During the Cotton Bowl "we also get to meet different people from all over the world," she said.

The squad will be performing a dance to the song "Celebration" and will spend much of Wednesday practicing.

Thursday they will get to go to the New Years parade in Downtown Dallas.

They will return home to Upland after their Cotton Bowl performance Friday.

"This is the first time our school has remotely done anything like this," Scritsmier said.
